... for essentially killing a 90 year old man.

See the story here

He was sentenced to three years for the burglary at the Godfreys' bungalow with six months concurrent for carrying a knife. He was given a further two-year sentence for a burglary in January.
What kind of message does this send out? Concurrent sentences?

I really hope no one ever burgles my house because there will be a murder case on the cards.

Concurrent sentences?
The biggest joke in the British justice system... what is the point of them?

All that says to me is, if your going to commit a crime, make sure you commit lots of other crimes too. You'll serve the same amount of time regardless.

Not exactly, but it does mean if you commit armed robbery for example then giving a granny a beating on the way out is of no consequence as its the robbery that carries more time.

EDIT: Its kind of like Catholic confession. If you get caught you fess up to everyhting you've ever done that is either the same or not as bad, and the cops can't touch you for it again after you've been to court.

I thought Blunkett got rid of the "double jeopardy" concept?
I'm chucking what's left of any intruders over the fence for the neighbour's Staffie.

I thought Double Jeopardy meant that you couldn't go on trial for the same crime twice.... nothing to do with concurrent sentences....?

it does, tek alluded to it when he said:

But if you fess up to everything, you serve them all concurrently and therefore get off scot free (bar whatever the worst one was, which you serve time for). If you're gonna do something wrong, keep going til you do it right!

good point, i see what you mean now gk.. double jeopardy wouldn't apply even if it were still in effect, as you would have been tried and convicted of the crime.. you can hardly be tried and convicted for it again! lol

Which brings us back to how can it be justified that you only serve once sentence? Especially as the worst sentences in this country now are in general 10 years with the option of early parole for just playing pool, watching TV and not misbehaving.

I was chatting to a young man from Lichfield not so long ago who has been in the big house and has said that he is considering (seriously) reoffending because life in prison is better than on benefits. W....T.....F!?!?!

I would just like sentences to be "minimum term" rather than wild estimates....

I.e. if someone gets 10 years, I want that to be a minimum not a "you serve two thirds of that and if you're good then we knock half off and then we'll start preparing you for release by giving you weekend leave after 6 months" crap....

Its just a massive bunch of bullsh1t to make the public think criminals are being punished with decent spells in the clink when they aren't.

... which I'm sure I thought had something to do with double jeopardy when I posted it.

Wasn't the double jeopardy thing ended because of the Stephen Lawrence murder, so they could prosecute the people who did it, after the police had bungled the investigation?

By the way, was anyone else, upon reading the subject, hoping for a story about someone stealing a cement mixer?

Killer brags on facebook - from prison

Can I have a great big WTF? Why don't they use phone jammers in prisons? Or at least break his fingers a bit.
No, that will infringe on his human rights.

Besides if he's not enjoying himself in prison whats the point of us paying £500/day to keep him in there?

In fact why is he in there at all, he only murdered someone in cold blood, thats not even against the law any more is it?
