Just saw that his death is being attributed to a mix of six prescription drugs, as opposed to the illegal ones most suspected. Also appears the breakup was affecting him badly:

As well as earning nearly $1bn (£670m) worldwide since its July release, director Christopher Nolan's sequel The Dark Knight has earned a posthumous award for the late Australian actor Heath Ledger, who starred as the Joker.

Haven't had this off my TV since we got the DVD this week, without doubt the most talked about and watched film of this year, Heath played a baddie better than any baddie I've ever seen and in Tenshons words "the best bad guy ever, even better than Darth Vader".

For me the scene of the film is when he walks away from the hospital in the nurses outfit as it blows up behind him, I love that walk...comedy with a twist of darkness.

agreed. there are two other shots that have stuck in my mind too............

after the joker has broken out of the police station with the chinese accountant, he's stolen a police car and is riding with his head out of the window. unhinged and scary.

at the end when the batman has the joker strung up and he's telling bats about his corruption of harvey dent. the joker is hanging upside down but the camera is turned to his aspect making him appear the right way up. a simple technique but very effective in this case. the joker appears to be floating like a spectre and for me, this is key in showing the joker is more than just a criminal / bad guy. there's something supernatural about him - an agent of chaos.

One of the most powerful performances I have seen in a main stream movie for some time imo. Made christian with his insanely growly voice almost boring to watch...
