Horne and Corden

I have just watched half an hour of Horne and Corden as it was in 'Comedy' and included the name 'Horne', which is hallowed amongst those of a certain age, and found it to be shite. Is it just me? Am I really that out of touch?

No your not. I started to watch this once and turned it off after 10 minutes of utter rubbish. I could be wrong though, Because as ive said ive only seen 10 minutes of it.

I did my best and did watch the entire half hour. I do find it difficult to imagine how someone could spend whatever this cost and feel proud of the result. I just wondered if I was completely out of touch with modern humour. Are there no better people available to fill the same time-slot?

Kenneth Horne would be spinning in his grave - if he hadn't been cremated. If they use any of his 'name-jokes', eg., Hornagraphic Productions, then I really will write and complain. Actually, I probably won't, as I don't intend to suffer it again.

On around the horne i do like to listen to kenneth williams talking of danglers and his grimmets...

Seeing as neither of them were any good in anything they'd done before, how could you expect it to be any good?

if you don't think gavin & stacey was any good you are in a tiny minority..

i agree that this new sketch show is absolute dross, though.. i caught about 5 minutes of the first one, and every single one of the "jokes" seemed to be a variation of "ISN'T MATTHEW CORDEN FAT?? LOLZZZZZZZZ"

Lot of people have said this show is not very good. I have not watched any yet. Perhaps a few more forumites would share their opinions...

Saw one episode. Got bored.
I'm clearly in a minority as I find all of these unfunny:
Catherine Tate, Rob Brydon, Karen Taylor, Little Britain, Wrong Door, Hyperdrive.

Hmm, saw a bit, turned it off. I may even have done the washing up instead. Also hate Catherine Tate, she really gets on my tits. Like Little Britain though.

I was afraid Tate would ruin Doctor Who, but was pleasantly surprised. I won't have the sketch show in the house, though.
Rob Brydon's alright on QI, but nothing else he's done has ever grabbed me.
Didn't see Gavin and Stacey; is it worth a look?

I've been watching Steptoe and Son reruns on G.O.L.D. recently, and they're the funniest programme I've seen for months.
They were made in 1974.
This should tell me something, but I can't work out what.

it's not as earth-shatteringly funny as the some people make out, imo, but it's worth a watch.. gavin & stacey (the characters) are very sweet and endearing, which is half of its appeal..

although this, along with the fact that i'm sure you said a similar thing about dad's army not too long ago, makes me think that anything made after 1979 probably isn't your thing lol..

It's nice to know that I'm not as out of touch as I feared, except, perhaps, with BBC programme commissioners. I. too. find Messers Tate, Brydon and Taylor a bit tedious, although Little Britain has it's moments. Of Wrong Door and Hyperdrive I know nothing - so far. I was aware of Gavin and Stacy but I never saw enough of it to form an opinion. I get the same feeling with Horne and Corden that I get whenever I am unlucky enough to see Patrick Kielty - here's someone who has decided to become funny, rather than someone who has discovered that they are funny.

1974 would have been the very end of Steptoe, the first ones were black and white. Liking old stuff doesn't preclude liking new stuff. The Likely Lads is my 'thing', but the Office was pure genius. There was rubbish produced in all eras but the good stuff usually survives the test of time. Will we be watching re-runs of Horne and Corden in 30 years?

Not true: Only Fools and Horses is IMO brilliant. (Until this century, anyway.)
I like Al Murray a lot, particularly The Pub Landlord chat show that I can't remember the name of...
erm... that's about it. :)
Not everything made before 1979 is gold, though. The Kenneth Williams Show, anybody?

As Gramaisc said, will anyone be watching G&S or H&C in 40 years time?

Kenneth Williams may have done some iffy things but I won't have anything said against him as he was in Round the Horne, which any right-thinking person will agree is the funniest thing ever to occur. Al Murray is OK, a bit like a watered-down Alf Garnet, don't you think? Of stand-up types, Frankie Boyle is the one for me at present.

I can't believe no one has mentioned possibly the least funny program that BBC3 has churned out to date and that's out of quite a stacked field of contenders. How this shit manages to have been on air for so long is beyond me. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you: 2 Pints of Lager

If anyone says they like it, I'm coming round with my killing stick.

I haven't seen much of it, but I got the impression that is was intended to be a sort of watered-down version of Men Behaving Badly so that girls could like it too.

I have very little experience of Alf Garnett, I'm afraid :( Should I start with Til Death Us Do Part or In Sickness and In Health?
Absolutely with you on RtH, it's the funniest radio I've heard since ISIHAC. (RIP Humph :()

someone posted on here last week saying how excited they were that the new series was starting lol.. i couldn't believe there was a "new" series - i know it's on bbc3 all the bastard time but i assumed that was just them repeating the existing 100 series over and over and over and over again..

Start at the beginning with Alf. Is it ever on these days? Not having a telly leaves me a bit out of touch on these things. Perhaps it's a bit too 'difficult' for nowadays.

RtH will be on the National Curriculum when I take over. Florence will confirm that nearly all conversations can be ended with a reference. It genuinely taught me more than all the ten schools that I went to. The funniest visual comedy of all time, even if it was on the radio.

Humph was along the same lines - how to say something whilst actually saying something else.
