Incident on Weston Road - Road closed, Sat 27th Oct 2012.

i just got back from work, and they were closing the weston road off at both ends just as i was driving down it! i didn't know what was happening, and it looked like a lot of unmarked police cars, so of course i jumped to all sorts of "they're busting hippies!" conclusions, and excitedly took some photographs:

i didn't realise at the time that it was an accident - as i type this, i can hear helicopters overhead, which can't be a good sign.. hope it's not too bad, although the amount of emergency services present doesn't bode well :(

There's also been a Police helicopter hovering over the Littleworth area, an air ambulance was also around too. This was around 6pm. At one point they were quite close together.

Interesting that neither the AA nor Traffic England have shown anything in Stafford..

Something to bear in mind if you're checking a route..?

I spoke to Fire and Rescue and they said there had been no accidents in the last few hours in Stafford and nothing in that area which suggests it's a police operation. Talked to Staffordshire Police but can't get through to a duty officer and the control room remain tight lipid. Thankfully it sounds like the fatal accident a few people were reporting is NOT what happened here.

BBC still saying "accident involving two vehicles". http://www.bbc.co.uk/travelnews/stoke

BBC said:
A518 Staffordshire - A518 Weston Road in Stafford closed and delays in both directions between the A34 Queensway junction and the Within Lane junction, because of an accident involving two vehicles.

I saw it, but as I said, Fire and Rescue are pretty clear that they haven't been called to anything and said they would have known if that was the case. People I've spoken to are reporting police cars, police helicopters, but no ambulances or fire engines. Sounds like a police incident to me. I'll let you know if I can get through to the duty office.

Indeed, just wondering who told them that, as they weren't saying that when it first started..?

I couldn't tell you. I haven't been able to get through to the Ambulance Service and I still can't get the on-duty officer at Staffs Police.

Perhaps it's a pedestrian/motorcycle/pedal cycle incident..? Hence the use of the word 'vehicles'..?

People on Twitter are saying that ambulances have attended..

Right, spoke to on-duty officer at West Midlands Ambulance Service. He confirmed there had been a serious incident on Weston road involving a motorcycle. He said there wasn't any more detail than that until he could get reports back from the hospital, but reiterated it was very serious.

He explained the confusion over Fire and Rescue reporting that there had been no incidents in the area came from them not being needed at the incident.

My sister has just informed me that her hubby was walking down the Weston road to meet their son from town and the police wouldn't let him walk down by the Prince. Doesn't look good.

Rumours are also abound regarding an escaped prisoner too.

I've just been out in the car and it's all still closed off and blue lights to be seen a few hours later. Seems a very long time to deal with an accident just involving one or two vehicles no matter how serious it might have been. Anyone more in the know yet?

BBC and Transport Direct both reporting 'cleared'. AA and Traffic England don't seem to have reported it at all..

Not sounding too good at all is it. Hope that both can go on to make a full recovery
Indeed.

Weston Road is not the pleasantest route, especially during busy times of the day. The junctions are often marked by some agitated driving, especially the Westhead Avenue / St Thomas Street and Cull Avenue junctions.
