Is MAC filtering enough?

my router is an absolute dog.. it drops the wireless connection whenever it feels like it, and needs to be rebooted at least once a day or it stops working altogether..

after a brief :google:, i have a feeling it's related to the encryption used.. now, obviously i'm not going to just turn this off, and run an open network with gay abandon, but how about if i turned stopped broadcasting my SSID and turned on MAC filtering - would this be enough?

presumably, even if someone did manage to discover my SSID and connect to the network, their client would be disallowed due to not being on the MAC whitelist.. surely this is robust enough for a home network? or am i overlooking something? :raise:

I would say this is good enough.

Encryption is my eyes is only used to keep freeloaders from using your internet. If someone really wanted to freeload your wifi, they would, encryption or no encryption.

In a previous post you mention Linksys so which Linksys model are you using as the one I have has the same problem.

Mines a WRK54G and it smokes pole.
Always dropping out.
searched using :google: but to no avail so i just stopped using it.

Hmm, I believe I have the same router. Mine works OK usually, but when streaming media I always get pauses every few minutes. I flashed it to use a different firmware but it didn't help at all. I'll replace it when I can be bothered.

apparently it's a known problem, that only third party firmware (dd-wrt/tomato/etc.) can solve - which mine doesn't support :grr:

something to do with the router not releasing stale sessions/connections properly, which is a problem when you've got things like bittorrent caning through hundreds of connections every minute..

I ran MAC Filtering and not broadcasting for years on my 802.11b connection for years with no probs.
Now i've got 802.11n i've whacked up the security cos I can, but as you've all previously pointed out, if someone wanted to, they would! plus mcdonalds is free anyway :P
