Is Oxford Gardens a rough area?

Hi guys im a long time stalker first time poster here on the forums. Quick introduction, my name is Dan, im 25 and live in Stafford and have done all my life. Im a longtime retail worker and have worked for various companies over the years. Currently im engaged and me and my partner are expecting our first baby early next year.

Now to my first question, because my missus is pregnant i need to move house and would love to stay with my current landlord as he is a very reasonable man. Today he told me he owns properties in Rising Brook and Oxford Gardens and will let us know if housing becomes available. After stalking on the internet i saw that a few members here on the forums live in Oxford Gardens or have done at some point. Which brings me to the actual question, is it a rough area? Ive heard from people in the past that it can be quite rough. After looking on Google Maps it seems to look like quite a nice area. I can honestly say i dont think ive ever been down that area of town before. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks in advance guys.

I wouldn't say its rough. There's a lot worse places in Stafford.

At John Wheeldon end it can get a bit noisy at playtime and hometime.

I've lived in Oxford gardens and around there since I was born, maybe I've just got used to the level of rough though.

Ideally aim for the bigger numbers in the street i.e. 200+, those houses are bigger and gardens longer.

It seems everyone's lived in The O.G. (Oxford Gardens) at some point - we've been here 4 years next month. We live about mid way up, opposite the tiny dolls houses that make up the site that used to be the lotus shoes factory.

We moved here because previously as a student I'd lived in a similar house on Sandon Rd, and we fancied the idea of having one to ourselves (we have a lot of stuff) so there's plenty of room for us. We were also keen to have something with original features - so we were bowled over by the size of our house, and the fact it hadn't been touched really since the 60's. I should point out we rent.

The other reason we picked the area was it was mid way between both our works and we can walk to town - and it's spot on for that. There's also a few good pubs, convinence stores & a jolly big park etc

It is a built up area, with a real mix of people (families, students, oaps, young families, couples etc) the walls are thin (we can hear the kids next door - I'm sure they can hear our telly / the husband's guitar), and sometimes sitting in our garden is disrupted by people walking past in the lane. We have also been burgled twice (once a sneak in, one they broke into the shed and stole my husbands bike) - and yes I've heard accounts of vandalism on cars etc - but I'm not sure I'd want to live anywhere else, it certainly doesn't seem rough to me...

(oh, and welcome to the forum)

My lad used live there, shared with his brother, they loved it. Decent sized house for a 2 bedroomed affair, back garden wasn't too bad. Only problem they really had was some twonk in a hoodie decided to lob a brick over the back gates at no 2 sons car and smash the window in,someone else kicked at the front door but as far as i'm aware no damage was done there. Eldest loved it so much he'd like move back again some day.

In my very limited experience the traffic is an absolute nightmare in the morning around there due to the parked cars and the school run.

There's been a murder down there in the past, but that can happen anywhere.

The Young Basils can lower the tone, but it all comes down to your next door neighbour in the long run and eejits pop up in all class areas

Doxey is of course the creative quarter of Stafford, we can create an equal mix of harmony and havoc ( half day closing Wednesdays )

How do I edit this?
I'd pretty much agree to what everyone else has said, not a posh area by any means but certainly not 'rough' in that it's fairly free from the gangs of bored youths & drunkards that seem to terrorise large estates. I tend to romanticise it as 'shabby bohemian' but that's probably not everyone's opinion of the place!

Live on OG (top end in ex prison officers houses) and personally think its an ok place. I have, on more than one occasion in recent months, left my laptop bag on my cars front seat with the doors unlocked over night and was very relieved to find everything as it should be. Any scum bag reading this dont get ideas...I dont ever do it now!

I grew up in Oxford Gardens ('70s to '90s) and my folks still live there now, near Henry Street. A great place to grow up as a kid, we had plenty of open space with the field at the back of the house.

I drop my daughter at there house every morning between 7.30-8am and have no problem with traffic. Although with parked cars on both sides of the road it can take a while to drive down it some times.

I wouldn't say it was a rough area although my dad has had his garage broken in to and a bike stolen. Then again, we were burgled within a month of moving to the Newport Road.

I'd say the best parts of Oxford Gardens would be by the playing field (but I'm biased!). The bigger semi detached houses nearer the Fonthill Road end look nice and most have off-road parking so it's easier to drive down.

The policeuk stats show it is above the average crime rate compared to the rest of the country but then again so is the rest of central Stafford.

The violence figured tend to skew crime figures for Stafford. Which does make me wonder if much of the violence is due to the Army types in the area?

The army types you suggest reside in Tedder road married quarters mainly. That's quite a distance away although with a decent head wind you can sometimes hear them from around 15 streets away lol. Who doesn't love hearing married couples argue though lets be honest, especially if there a bit tipsy.

Like most on here grew up opposiste shoe factory 60's to 80's and never had any issues. As with any terraced housing a long line of cars on the street can attract a certain type however we loved living down there. Agree with other poster thought that parking can be an issue with traffic.

If ther was any issues we were never aware of them and enjoyed living there. Big houses inside.

Yes I remember the body in the bin too!!

The body in the bin was a lady called Marion, she used to work at St.Georges. Would not have harmed a fly,it were quite a shock to all who knew her to hear of her death.

That was found outside my neighbour's garden two doors down - quite exciting watching all the police activity, helicopter etc. as a 10 year old :D

Why was she murdered?

on Police UK the majority of the incidents are outside the Kebab shops and Couture, it raises the crime profile for anyone living nearby, take the time to look at the map and the breakdowns of what crimes are where.
