Where was

E) Bounce of lots of rocks ala Homer in Springfield Gorge?

Cos I'm pretty sure thats what I'd do, very few of those cliffs seem to go straight down!

HOW TO JUMP FROM A BRIDGE OR A CLIFF INTO A RIVER

Jump feet first.

Keep your body vertical.

Squeeze your feet together.

Enter the water feet first and clench your buttocks together. If you do not, water may rush in and cause severe internal damage. (Am sceptical myself, but would sooner clench than get rinsed.)

Protect your crotch area by covering it with your hands. Don’t flap the arms about – upon impact, the force of the water could cause you to punch yourself in the head. A broken hand or indeed, being unconscious is not useful in this situation.

Immediately after you hit the water, spread your arms and legs. This creates resistance, which will slow your plunge to the bottom.

Yes, perhaps the scene should have been set in a gorge, where the walls, having being shaped by a glacier, are more sheer.

Love that Simpsons episode.......

Read this the other day:

If you are trapped on the edge of a cliff with a hungry tiger at the top and a hungry tiger at the bottom, and you see a plant bearing fruit nearby. Pluck that fruit, bite into it, and taste.

TRAVELING IN DANGEROUS REGIONS

Check with the Foreign Office for travel warnings before traveling to dangerous states.

Carry colour pictures of everyone in your party in case something happens. Stow photocopies of your passport identification page and your credit cards in a safe hiding place.

Dress conservatively and do not wear obvious signs of wealth.

Ask permission before taking pictures. Do not take pictures of women, the infirm or the elderly.

Carry a ‘mugger’s wallet’ containing a small amount of money along with your photo ID (not your drivers license or passport!). Use this wallet for your daily small expenses, but be prepared to surrender it in an emergency.

Hmm, I got 40 but I dispute the one about the watch!
I know! Its almost like saying, "Have a watch so you can tell the time". Duh! Knowing how to use your analouge watch to find your bearings is a useful skill*. As well as being able to find north by the stars**.

* hold the watch with 1200 pointing to your left. Rotate so the hour arm is pointing towards the sun. The point halfway between the hour arm and 1200 points south.

** Follow the path of the last two stars in the 'cup' of the constellation Ursa Major (the Great Bear or the Big Dipper). The first bright star you get to is the North Star.

Suprisingly few people know about the navigation, I always get funny looks when I tell people that. I managed to guide us through the centre of london without a map using that technique when my mate took a wrong turn going to a NIN gig!

HOW TO ESCAPE WHEN TIED UP

When your captors start binding you, expand your body as much as possible. Take a deep breath, puff out your chest and pull your shoulders back. (Just hope you haven’t been rendered unconscious while they tie you up!)

Flex your arms against the bonds. Push against the bonds as much as possible. Keep your wrists apart. Brace toes and knees together to spread the ankles.

Once your captors leave, suck in your chest and stomach. If (by the mercy of God and dumb captors) you have some extra room then attempt to wriggle free.

and for today.........

TREATING A SPRAINED ANKLE

Elevate the ankle. Sit down and raise the ankle at least 18 inches above the ground. Set the ankle on an object to support it.

Make a pressure bandage. If no emergency bandage is available, cut or tear a shirt / fabric into long, 4-inch-wide strips. Two 3-foot strips should suffice.

Wrap the ankle. Place one end of the bandage in the middle of the foot and use a figure of eight pattern to wrap it up and over the ankle and back around the foot. Keep the wrapping snug. Use tape, rubber bands, or string to secure the end of the bandage to the leg.

Make a cold compress. Place ice in a plastic bag or wrap it in a shirt. Do not apply the ice directly to the skin; add a layer of clothing or plastic to prevent freezing of tissue.

In case you really wanted to know...........................

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT

A

Approach with care. Beware of traffic, electricity, etc.

Assess consciousness. Shake shoulders gently and shout loudly, “Hello, are you all right?â€

No response?

Assistance. Shout for help from other bystanders.

Airway. Clear foreign material, lift chin and tilt head slightly.

20071114131329-airway.jpg

B

Breathing. Check by looking, listening, and feeling while maintaining airway for 5 seconds. Ignore intermittent gasping respiration.

C

Circulation. Check carotid pulse for 5 seconds. Located by gently placing fingers on casualty’s Adams apple or larynx then moving to the side. Do not check by using your thumb as this has a pulse of its own, which will give you a false reading.

20071114131437-pulse.jpg

No breathing and no pulse.

Call an ambulance, using assistance if available. Give details of casualty and location.

Give 2 breaths. Keep airway clear, pinch nose and maintain a good mouth seal. Allow their chest to fall between breaths.

20071114131348-breathe.jpg

Give 15 chest compressions. Interlock fingers; arms straight; 2 finger widths up from bottom of breast bone / sternum; at a rate of 80/minute.

20071114131415-massage.jpg

Continue the ratio of 2:15 until an ambulance arrives. Do not recheck pulse or breathing unless patient shows signs of life.

No breathing but pulse present.

Give 10 breaths at a rate of 1 every 5 seconds.

Call an ambulance. This can be done before if an assistant is available.

Continue breathing at same rate.

Recheck pulse / breathing after every 10 breaths.

If the casualty starts to breathe, place them in the recovery position.

Pulse and breathing present.

Place in recovery position unless suspicious of spinal injury. If a spinal injury is suspected, maintain the airway by chin lift only. Turn the casualty into the recovery position only if vomiting / bleeding profusely from the mouth.

20071114131457-recoverypos.jpg

Bend the casualty’s under arm to stop them from rolling over. Gently roll them onto their side. Bend the upper leg to support the position. Tilt their head back and tuck upper hand under the chin to keep the airway open.

Call an ambulance.

Monitor breathing.

Stay calm and good luck!
