Its easy spending other people's money on fun stuff ;)

Just blame me... when SWMBO threatens to go on strike over it...

I've not really looked at the new kindles, are they better than a nexus 7?
My mum's thinking about getting a Kindle Fire and has asked my advice. I've never used one and haven't really used many other tablet-type things.

@henryscat - did you end up getting one? If so, what's your verdict?

My initial reaction to her asking if she should get one was to say I'm pretty sure there are better alternatives out there, but I haven't got a clue whether this is right or not!

From what I've been told the kindle is just an android with amazon software on it, so I'm wondering how long before you can install the amazon overlay on another tablet? If that is the case though, the nexus 7 is a more powerful device for the same price. Assuming you get the HD version anyway, the standard kindle fire doesn't appear that good.

I assume so, its all amazon based. Bit of a review here: http://reviews.cnet.com/kindle-fire-hd/

One thing to bear in mind though, reading on a backlit screen is not as nice as on a normal kindle. Maybe its just me, my eyes are deteriorating lately, but I find LCDs horrible to read for a sustained periods. The old kindle scrren was lovely to use.

I hadn't thought of that, and my misses loves reading her Kindle for hours, now you mention it my pc screen is LCD and it can be hard on the eyes.

This is just my opinion of course, but I have a nexus 7 and a 'normal' kindle with a keyboard* and I find the nexus great for browsing the net, watching videos, playing games etc. I won't read as such on it though, not books, as my eyes get strained. Sure you can use them in the dark, thats great, but when I read I prefer the lamp on and something that 'feels' like a book. To me the perfect combination is to have a full blown android tablet and keep the old kindle too. There is nothing to stop you installing the kindle app on any android device, so you can still read your books (I assume!) should you wish to, but don't bin the old kindle yet.

And if you are going for an android tablet get the nexus, its more powerful than the kindle one for the same price. Unless you need the amazon kindle interface, which lets face it is mainly designed to tie you to their own store and as such has more limited app choices, you'd be better off without. Plus you have to pay $15 to remove the ads from your lock screen with amazon!

* Well, I don't really own them, but I have permanent access to them!

I watched some review on the Nexus and i think you are correct it would be a better choice, thank you for your advice.

If you like the Nexus 7 but have a tighter budget, I have just got myself a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 for just over £100 after cashbacks and points etc...

Great little piece of kit, not as powerful as the Nexus (not much in it though) but pros and cons to both... would definately recommend the GT2 7.0 though.

As someone who uses a kindle, and occasionally the kindle app on my iPad, I can confirm that she would be able to download her library of books onto the Kindle Fire HD. As soon as she signs into her amazon account on the new device, she will see all of her books stored in the "cloud" and from there, she can download them onto the device.

Another nice feature is the synchronisation that you get between devices. If she reads a chapter on her standard kindle, and then picked up her other device, it would remember the page she got to etc.

I agree. I can read my kindle for hours on end, but if I try to read my book on the iPad, I just end up with an awful headache. Therefore, I try to keep my devices separate - the kindle for reading, the iPad for everything else.
