laptop, flooded with pop ups

:grr:we have bought the eldest a lap top for school work.
everytime she goes onto google to search, the laptop suddenly becomes inundated with advertising popups that have nothing to do with the original search. It is impossible to use the laptop and despite trying to use AVAST and manually attempt to erase viruses the problem continues
i am a self confessed technophobic and the husband would like to think he has some superior knowledge than myself, but i don't think he has. Is there anything we can do before one of us throws the damn thing from an upstairs window!! .

Have you installed something from the web, or clicked a dodgy link in an e-mail?

You either need to find the programme doing this and uninstall it, or use malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy.

If you don't know what you're doing - no offence but sounds like not from the OP - then definitely have an expert like WMR sort it.

Try running a full scan with Malwarebytes as suggested above. Failing that, give us a yell :)
