Mars last night. Its very obvious at the moment, quite low in the south around midnight, with Saturn close by.

There was some rather lovely noctilucent cloudage a bit earlier - unlikely to still be there but it might be.

I looked out my window at 0310 this morning to be greeted by I think at least 2 AH-64 Apache's maneuvering at low level.

Can only think that they were re-fueling at the MoD base as they were only around for about 30 minutes or so.....as much as I like the sound of the Rolls Royce turbine engines, and the beating of the rotor blades....perhaps not at such an early time......bloomin' noisy buggers!!

Kindly reminder that it is Perseid season - saw a belter two days ago, an underwhelming one earlier - so always worth a look if you happen to be out 'n' about.

Look for the big W, slightly N of E, becoming more E as the night progresseth.

Peak night of 11th into morn of 12th, but anytime from now until the 20somethingth.

It was nice and clear last night around midnight :) Did catch a Perseid close to Cassiopeia along with a space station pass. Was also having a play with a modified security camera pointed at the Andromeda galaxy.

I lay out on a (sun)lounger in Cyprus in 1970 for the Perseids, before there were many streetlights. There really was one every few seconds and some were almost vertical, leading some people to flinch a bit...

The best I've managed is about 60 meteors per hour from the UK. It looks like this year could be similar to your 70's event with an outburst predicted ?

Predicted zenith hourly rate (ZHR) for Perseids in 2016. The ZHR describes the shower at its peak, when the radiant is overhead

In 2016, astronomers expect an outburst of Perseid meteors! The prediction is for 200 meteors per hour seen on the peak night, August 11-12 (evening of August 11, morning of August 12). That’s about double the usual rate.

There's supposed to be a 12 year cycle for the really good ones.

It might actually have been 1969 that I remember.....

Indeed, it is predicted to be a particularly good year - there is, of course, a quite interesting reason for this - which can only mean one thing...
