Possible comet for Xmas !! … why not ? They were once thought to be harbingers of doom, seems to me it would fit the times. :teef:

Pity about the name though … I mean … Comet Machholz-Fujikawa-Iwamoto (C/2018 V1) doesn't exactly run off the tongue ..

I'm thinking something more along the lines of Valkyrie .. or Nemesis … or Splatjob.

That mention of brakes reminded of an old SciFi story wherein what they thought was a comet coming in from a long way out started to brake as it approached the Sun. This would suggest it isn't a comet. More like a 'Culture' Abominator class warship from an Ian M. Banks novel. (AI sentient but very psychopathic kill crazy nutjob ships built by the peace loving 'Culture' to calm stroppy aliens down.) :cops:

This fellah is coming from a long long way out … if you fiddle with this page you can get an idea of that ...

Somehow I thought an Abominator Class warship would have been bigger, and faster. Still, it is Ireland … I bet even the 'Culture' would find itself a bit out of its depth over there. :buddy:

Much as I like to see trees fully leafed up in late Spring and high Summer, there's no denying that for these sort of pictures, bare trees provide a much better atmosphere for these shots. Brilliant red skies and bare trees, a delight to the eye as these pictures show. :)

Comet Machholz-Fujikawa-Iwamoto is developing tails. It will be at it's closest to Earth in about a week as it plunges toward the Sun. It's not yet visible to the naked eye (and very hard to say if it ever will be) but if you've got a decent pair of binoculars and are willing to get up at unholy hours, you should see it.

The problem with comets is that they rarely live up to their pre-arrival hype.

Of course, occasionally, they exceed their hype, 1996's Hyakutake and 1997's Hale-Bopp being the best examples in recent times.

Yeah more often than not they disappoint. Since this is a new one and thought to be first time coming in there was some hope. But its closest approach to the Sun is in early December so chances are it's not going to be anywhere near the league of those two you mentioned.

If I remember rightly the Nimrod was a modified Comet and gave long service.
The intended later variants, the AEW3 and the MRA4 were utter catastrophes that ended with planes that had never flown being cut up on the ground.

The problems were mostly with their added equipment, but a lot of money was chucked away.

What was a good maritime patrol aircraft started to become silly when they kept asking more and more of its roles and capacity. Now US aircraft companies are laughing all the way to the bank. :(
