M6 roadworks (18 miles) between Crewe and Knutsford

There are currently road works on M6 north of stoke, several miles of avg speed camera controlled road. Along there yesterday I spotted three blokes and a digger by a bridge :grr:

Yeah, been through that lot recently. Oddly there are similar workings just north of Lancaster (diverted on to shoulder, narrow lanes) which have no speed reduction in place. But there were actually people working on the road Oop North.

There never seems to be any rhyme or reason to the road work layouts :?: Sometimes cones and no speed limit or cones and 50 mph or cones and 40 mph. There may, or may not, be cameras on the 50 mph sections but always in the 40 MPH zones. But always the same few blokes (usually on their break) and a digger and 90% of the cones section with no activity :hmm:

I must have explained my cone theory somewhere, but i can't find trace of it here. I'll do some searching, but basically I worked out how many miles worth of cone could be easily stored on an area the same as a football pitch and went on to prove that the only reason there are so many "roadworks" is that there is nowhere else to put the cones.

I've often wondered what proportion of the cones in the EU are in the UK?

Enjoying a drop of red.
Is anyone actually surprised at this?

Umpteen years inconvenience and costs to ordinary folk just so that we can have speed cameras (turned on all the time) between Birmingham and Manchester.

A fantastic revenue raising opportunity.

They are also doing this on the M62. I saw someone drift across and into the cones earlier today, wiped out a good twenty of them, presumably checking their speed rather than looking ahead.

Thank goodness the workforce was somewhere else at the time eh?

A plan to make the M6 Toll road free has been revealed in a draft proposal for the West Midlands Combined Authority. The document asked the government for £15m a year to cover the cost of tolls in a bid to reduce congestion.
It said: "Make the M6 Toll free at the point of use, generating economic benefits of at least £1.2bn."

Concerns £1.8 billion M6 work will lead to traffic chaos through Stafford

A £1.8 billion investment in Staffordshire roads – including the M6 at Stafford – has been welcomed but major concerns have been raised about traffic being diverted through Stafford while work goes on.
But Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy says he is pushing for at least one carriageway to be kept open when work begins at junction 13, which is likely to be in 2017. He says the junction may have to shut for 28 days, with traffic diverted through Stafford - which he fears will leave Stafford clogged.

Hi

The result of not keeping on top of the motorway network. We are now suffering the effects the 1990s cull on road building, resulting in stuff all spare capacity to cope with major roadworks.

All the best
