Media players

I have several media players at home, some networked some not. Is anyone interested in that sort of thing? If so I'll dig out the specs and list them here.

I guess not! Things I remember offhand are:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/Iomega-ScreenPlay-Director-HD-Media-Player_Peripheral_review
http://reviews.cnet.com/video-playe...e-freeagent-theater/4505-6463_7-33775715.html

Plus a few other ones that I can't remember, some of which are USB only. Starting to wonder why I have so many. I also have an android stick I don't really use, in fact I have loads of tech stuff that I really should clear out again!

Err, I'm not sure! I'll have a look when I get home, I know I have 2 with HDs in already, and the seagate takes a 2.5" in its docking bay (has to be the right seagate one though), but not sure about the others.

Might be interested in the Android stick if you decide to sell that, depending on spec and price. As with you probably won't use it much and waiting for a Chromecast but wouldn't mind a little play with one if you do sell.

Mine is the RK3066 I believe, pretty sure its a dual core / 1Gb. It runs everything great, but controlling it is a bitch if I'm honest. I've put nowTV boxes everywhere instead now, they only cost a tenner and do almost everything I wanted out of players I paid 10x that for!

Have been following your NowTV thread with interest. I don't have a desktop to stream from though and even if I did, can't see the point having that machine running constantly just to "supply" the now tv box.

Where did you get your Android stick from, might investigate getting one.

Cheers

I got this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cortex-A9-Graphics-Supports-Internet-Browsing/dp/B00B8547MS

It works fine, it runs everything, but I can't see the point without a touchscreen. I have two remotes, one with a touchpad and the other you point at the screen, but neither feel natural. As my main use was a media player, who wants to browse the net on their TV they can't focus well enough on at 1080p and without a KB and mouse? The nowTV is a plex streamer for a tenner, I can't fault it really.

As for plex, I have a machine on 24/7 anyway. My media is stored on the same PC that does all the downloading, and as I've automated it I leave it on so that it can do what it wants whenever it needs. I did replace the PC I used to use with a low power microserver though, it draws less than 50w when idle but still active. Obviously if all the HDs spin up that increases, but I am measuring 57w for that and the switch while I am RDPing into it. My main focus for the nowTV is distributed media, I want to be able to serve at least half a dozen external boxes at once whenever needed. Plex is ideal for this, I can use either a proper streamer, an app or just a web browser and still see all my stuff. Once I get the new line a few family members can cancel their sky/virgin subscriptions, I'm also getting the youview box as I believe that will make the perfect partner to my media centre. TV catchup on all the normal channels and my own channel for everything else, my mum is already set up but I have a few more to go.

As promised in another thread, media players I no longer need but appear to work:

Netgear Digital Entertainer Live (boxed near new) - £5
Iomega Screenplay tv link Director Edition with wifi dongle (boxed but box is tatty) - £20
IOMEGA ScreenPlay Director 1TB HDD Media Player (No box, back off remote missing) - £30
Seagate freeagent theatre+ (bit tatty, no box or PSU - 12v 2a req.) - £20
ATMT 160Gb HD media player (SCART only!) - £10
Android stick as linked above with BT keyboard remote - £30

Not amedia player but still a computery thingamabob:
Meebox without PSU (needs 12v 3a, still have it but am using it on some LEDs!) - £5

There are a few more knocking about, but TBH I don't think they work. If anyone wants anything post a message, I'll let the whole lot go for £70 if someone wants it all in one go to save messing about. I've just had enough of ebay so can't be bothered to sell it there.
