A smirking Ed Balls was installed as Shadow Chancellor last night – putting Labour’s ‘deficit denier in chief’ in control of the party’s economic policy.

Alan Johnson’s resignation left Ed Miliband no choice but to give the job to the man he made shadow home secretary only three months ago.

Mr Balls has the job of reclaiming Labour’s credibility on the economy – the biggest barrier to Labour winning its way back into power.
