I still think this is one of the best openings to any western I've ever seen. Clint Eastwood showing his directorial metal at an early stage. The question asked over the years has been: "Who was he ..?" Some say he was the brother of the murdered sheriff! I read Clint Eastwood's answer to this question in an interview, typically laconic: "You have to figure it out for yourself."
I've always thought he was the devil himself, none other than Old Nick .. given special dispensation by God to go down and administer punishment to a town with a dark murderous past. There are some clues to this idea as it goes on.
Regardless of how you see it, what you do know just from this opening scene ... is that this town is in deep shit.
