Just been for 'Coffee' at Costa in town, I wouldn't bother going if you're actually wanting something with a coffee flavour, seems I've just had a glass of warm milk. :roll:

Walked through the indoor market to the toilets. Worse than the last time I walked through, not inspiring me to stop and look at anything on the odd few stalls that were there. Just 4 old people chatting on a bench, and stallholders standing talking to each other. No one else in sight !

Youngest and myself have just been in there, he said exactly the same thing. Half the stalls appeared to be shut.

I stand corrected.

Sorry Carole, I was a bit harsh there but sometimes an old nerve is a bit raw. I don't think then & now are easily compared. Then you knew you had to get everything right and had to prepare for that day, on that day you were on your own. Now you have projects or other work all the time but you do have the time, you can use resources like internet & books while you are carrying out the work and can discuss it with others; you also have more support. Totally different forms of stress.

I suspect that the suicide rate is much lower nowadays than it was in the 1960s & 70s, different sorts of stress and far less support. Less knowledge of what was happening and what to do amongst students then I suspect. No suicides on my course but a couple of nervous breakdowns, on lad was finally led away literally gibbering. A friend of mine who went to a different university did commit suicide. He didn't seem to be coping very well but communication wasn't as instant as it is now and I don't think any of us realised what was happening and how bad it was until it was too late.

At the time the story was that the first two places in the country to be converted from coal gas to natural gas were Cambridge & Oxford in an attempt to reduce the suicide rate amongst students there. The commonest method was a handful of asprin and head in the gas oven. Different time, different place.

Suicide rates have sky rocketed i'm afraid.

I have decided that my children are a danger to themselves and others today. If they can fall over it, off it or down it they will. If it can be dropped, torn, broken or other wise trashed it is. So far I've thrown away 2 pairs of wellies. A pair of trousers, issued 3 plasters, soothed a fall down the stairs, nearly lost a pc monitor etc etc.
I'm going set decorating in an hour or so. I'm expected urgent phone calls.

Suicide rates in the UK have remained at around the same levels for the last 2 decades

Publicity may rise and fall

My smallest child is a danger to herself, & seems to be on a mission to break yet more bones in her body. This time its a toe, which now has to wait for a Dr to look at it tomorrow thanks to the closure of County Hospitals Children's A&E.

:clap::down: :grr:

Very true although regardless of the sad statistics the 60's and 70's are sadly much longer than 2 decades ago lol
Time flies.
