My boiler has been condemned!!!!

bit of bad news last thursday evening when my hot water boiler got condemned by the gasman.

even worse news when he said a very very rough estimate for the work would be between 2,200 and 2,300 to do the following:

take out defunct hot water boiler
brick up bathroom wall
take out central heating boiler
fit new boiler
change gas supply pipe to the 22mm required these days (possibly taking up kitchen/dining room floor and possibly having to move kitchen units)
fit new thermostat
fit new timer panel etc
fit new thermostatic valves to radiators (x6)

the reason the estimate is so rough is because he couldnt get into the cellar (yup, its still full of shit! but im not going into that story!)

does this sound about right to you out there?

also, does anybody work in the trade/know anybody in the trade who can give a recommendation for a boiler to go with?

obviously, ill be getting a few quotes (when the cellar has been cleaned- so may be some time) but i thought id do as much research as a i can.

thanks,

Presumably this quote is to replace your boiler, with a combi boiler, ie this being a different system and therefore the cost. Asking as a non plumber, couldn't you replace your old boiler with a similar one, and therefore avoid the combi option?

I do realise that combi boilers are generally reccomended now as they are more energy efficient, but if you haven't got the best part of 2 1/2 grand to chuck around, you might be grateful for a cheaper option. As I said I am not a plumber, but it still sounds a bit on the heavy side for a combi conversion.

You might want to try this http://www.ukplumbersforums.co.uk/ it's by plumbers, for plumbers !!

We've got boiler issues too, by reading a few posts we've come to realise, our boiler is a pile of ******** and is in need of a change.

Does seem reasonable to me, as of 2005 new boilers need to be registered and that fee is a considerable chunk of the quote. I would say that quote is ok. We paid something similar just before the regristration fee came into place.

probably a legal requirement these days, especially after that horror story recently about the toddler being scalded to death :|

and the bleeding rest! if i could sell the house now....i would.

anyhoo- this states that the boiler must be a condensing boiler.

being as the existing boiler has got to be about 20yrs old, really the most economical thing to do is to get the system changed to a combi boiler- not only for the fuel bill but also for further down the line.

the efficiency rating is also a massive factor for the HIP when i come to sell the house- which at this rate will be asap so i can save some money by moving into rented accomodation again.

i did look on the which? site and researched their best buys...i also looked on the energy saving trust website to see if they had any schemes i was eligible for....joy and rapture, there is one that could save me over £100 on either of the top 2 rated best buy boilers!!!!

all i have to do now is get some proper quotes for the work- hopefully in about 2 weeks time (just as my temporary lodger moves out!)- and ill be on my way, when ive found the wonga.
