My laptop is drunk.....

Hi guys, need to ask your opinion on how bad my laptop is and how quickly i can get it fixed. Its a works laptop too and last night my wife decided to give it a drink of sloe Gin. And now....well it still works but some of the keys wont work the bummer being i need 2 of the characters to enter the password to log on otherwise i would log on and just use a USB keyboard. Any quick easy (preferably cheap) options? I spoke to the IT guys at work and they said no problem fixing it but will take ages to sort (upwards of 3 weeks) which would be ok except i need one at home all the time at the minute as in middle of university course.
Any advice gratefully recieved.

(PS using works desk top PC to make this plea!)

Firstly you should be able to plug in a USB keyboard and log in - which would get you out of the creek in the immediate instance, although cleaning something like gin out might be quite a challenge - it's very sugary :(

Pop the USB keyboard in once windows has loaded and you get to the 'Press ctrl+alt+del to log on screen'.

You usually have to wait a few minutes for windows to detect a USB keyboard, if it hasn't been used in that port before.

This is true, especially if it's a slower laptop. Assuming you are using windows XP or above it will recognise it, just give it time. If it's Windows 98 you won't have any joy.

By the sounds of it you've just damaged the keyboard. HOPEFULLY it's gone no further or you could be slowly corroding motherboard components and working towards a permanent failure.

I would be happy to take a look on a no-fix no-fee basis. If the keyboard just needed cleaning you'd only be looking at a tenner. If the liquid has gone further then I would quote before doing anything. Let me know if I can be of assistance

Thanks guys for the suggstions.

The mouse pad wont work so i tried a usb mouse which also wouldnt work which is why i thought a USB keyboard wouldnt but it did so at work i managed to swich on, log in and connect up to a shared drive so all work i need to keep is now transferred on to there and also on to desk top.
Thanks for the offer WMRcomputers, if it was my own laptop or i couldnt of logged in i would of been round but since its works machine and i have my stuff backed up i will let them sort it. Hows the plans for this years light show?
Additionally a new power lead arrived this morning for the spare laptop so am also able to have a laptop at home too.

No probs mate. Glad you've found a way around it! :)
Lightshow news will be updated in next month or so. Just starting to sort the FM side of things as this is my priority this year - allowing me to repeat the show several times per hour without blasting out the neighbours! ;)
