Should it not be 'phoned, it being a shortening of the word telephoned?

I would have thought so, however, I think it has just become accepted that the shortened version of the word is to be written as phone. I can't recall a single occurance where I have seen it written as 'phone although I might start doing it to see if anyone picks it up and challenges it. Yes, I really do get that bored at work.

Fair enough, I was just trying to wind it up a bit. I do remember 'phoned being used, but it died out in the 70. On a related issue, it is my belief that the use of the apostrophe in the shortened word photo' is a large part of the cause for the random use of the "plural apostrophe", much seen in greengrocers and at boot sales, particularly where the singular ends in a vowel - as in tomato's, etc.
