New pub opening - Hungry Horse in Stafford

Went for lunch today and was really impressed. Don't go if you expect award winning food and a quiet atmosphere but for a good meal, friendly & quick service and at a great price then give it a go.

One thing I liked today was how they reserved the far area by the kids areas for families with younger children and try to keep them all together. This works well for us and well for the people without kids/older kids.

Only downside was some of the people in there and it's a minority so I'm sure it reflects most places in town. One person I overheard asked if the sound could be turned up on the Grand National, when the young waitress replied she was afraid it could't he said and I quote, "Well that's shit and this place is shit, won't come again". Poor girl didn't now what to say. With any luck he won't be back as they didn't deserve that.

Well done on an exceptional busy and hard week. Keep it up.

That sounds like exactly the sort of customer they don't need, hopefully as you say he'll stick to his word.

Just been, I liked the place. It was very busy, and I did hear the odd mistake get made, but its a new place and every seat was filled so I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

For those who don't know there is a sign up bonus but also a referral one. If you don't have a referral link please use mine below, but if a mate has one then use theirs obviously!

Signing up gets you a free sundae when you buy a meal, we just used ours. However if you refer a mate and they sign up you then get a BOGOF voucher for a main meal as well. Apparently if you refer more then you get more offers, dunno about that yet though.

Here's 3 of the meals we had, the carvery was also good:

This one is a kid's chicken burger.

Cider was the usual suspects, after having the misfortune of a few strongbow last night (market vaults and theatre bar) I just couldn't stomach another today so ended up drinking san miguel. I don't usually enjoy lager but its better than strongbow!

That wasn't mine. I was restrained, I just went for the 2 chicken breasts on a sizzler with onions and peppers plus chips and onion rings. Plus a salad, but that was just for show obviously.

See photo 2 above :D

Yeah, I thought that! What happens is they go off to find you a seat, when they find one they put a reserved sign on it to stop anyone else grabbing it then come back to you and show you to it. So no you can't reserve, its just there to stop the greeters taking you to occupied tables after saying they are free.

Can't remember the name but it was 2 burgers with 4 slices of bacon, onion rings, cheese and BBQ beans IIRC. Cost about £8.50.

I think thats the big H burger, 1 of our guests had it at the freebie 'eve of opening' training day, i agree that the food might not be award standards.. I had the chicken skewer sizzler bps .. wifey had the big bombay banquet with chicken korma... One hell of a meal that she couldnt manage to finish lol

Sunday we went for carvery and it was very busy, im not a big fan of carverys but i pulledva supervisor to one side and told him that i had run a carvery before and knew how difficult it was to keep things looking good when hot-holding food but i commented how lovely everything looked and how much we enjoyed it and asked him to thank the carvery staff for us. He looked genuinely surprised to be told that and i walked away puzzled at his apparent inability to take a compliment well, all became clear later when i was informed that there had been certain issues with the amount of prep done and they had to borrow from the main kitchen and use some of theirbequipment to catch up with things. There were also issues on saturday night with kitchen electrics frequently tripping out causing a few expletives to be uttered in the kitchen but they soldiered on and got the meals served which was good.

Im sure these are merely teething problems, and they will be ironed out in due course.

Everyone that i know that has been have said they like it there.

Apparently the target weekly taking is 60k and on friday alone they took over 19k, obviously this will subside a little after the initial rush to have a look etc

But we sat there sunday thinking .. Where the fook did everyone eat before Hh landed lol

We rarely eat out but were there on Sunday afternoon too. I know the play facilities aren't as big but I suspect a lot of the people came from the Red Hill, as lots had kids and there aren't many other places you'd want to eat out with them. Given the choice I'd go to the HH every time, even though they don't know what a real cider is!

We went down on Sunday to watch the football and have a carvery. We arrived in plenty of time to secure a table in front of a TV ready for the match to start but there were a few seating issues with other people who arrived closer to the kick off time, in parallel with seating trying to be managed for diners. From what I could tell the staff were polite and handled the situations well.

The carvery was pretty good, the meat was cooked well (turkey, ham and beef) and there was a good selection of potatoes, vegetables and trimmings available. All very tasty

I don't know if it's just because its just opened but there did seem to be a lot of staff wandering round the tables, clearing plates/glasses and checking if people enjoyed their meals, but not all of which were fully utilised even though it was very busy, (some very busy, others hardly doing anything) and the staff bringing out the food ordered off the main menu did seem to be struggling with the location of tables but that should improve over time

Enjoying a drop of red.
Well my vibrator went off earlier than expected so in we went to our table.

Good bits:
Food was nice, for what it was and good value.
Staff were friendly and well organises.
Seems to be quite a lot for kids to do.

Bad bits:
It was bloody hot in there (and yesterday was not a hot day). Without aircon goodness knows what it will be like on a really hot day.
It was cramped. We were a party of six and the first table they put us on was far to small. They happily moved us to a larger one when one became available but even that was the size of a table for four in another pub and a little on the cramped side.

We all reckoned we'd go again though but not on a hot day.

Disappointed, had to leave before getting a table due to hubbys strong dislike for queuing for a table. Hungry!
