New Queensway traffic lights

I generally have the sense not to try to go about the town during the school runs and so find myself sitting at these lights just watching them change colour when I could easily be a few hundred yards on - just watching some more lights, I suppose. They may have a function at certain times of the day, but most of the time they just seem to be an added restriction.

Which traffic lights? My bike has only been off the road for 6 weeks, they can't have put more up surely?!?!?

Having had to negotiate them again today.....you start to lose the will to live !! However, we are all wrong as some very highly paid consultants have almost certainly come up the scheme and they can't possibly be wrong !! Mind you...not now being able to go through the middle of town can't help ?!?! Oh and please please please add a filter from Lamascote to Riverway...even if it only lets 3 cars through at a time...."every little helps" after all !! Anything else.......oh yes...i'm sure its been covered on here before by others...but the traffic calming on Corpo !!! I'm not against traffic calming ...far from it....but a system that makes cars go onto the other side of the road can't be right !!! Add 2 foot high spped bumps every 30 yards by all means....but make people go on the other side ?!! Surely not !!! grrrrrrrr

Totally agree with you there riverwayevents on adding a filter system on Lammascote/riverway., its a bloody nightmare if you need to turn right into riverway.

What will it achieve? Either it will make the already long queues at the other end of Riverway with Lichfield Road even longer, or there will be even more rat running down Fairway then Queensville Avenue to get to Lichfield Road. People letting people out of Queensville Av just buggers the traffic flow on Lichfield Road, should just close that junction as already partly restricted with a no right turn from Lichfield Road anyway.

Last time I looked that 'No Right Turn' into Queensville Avenue was 'except cycles'! Weird.
Yep, it is except cycles, but a cyclist turning right there doesn't disrupt the traffic flow so seems fair enough!

It's not for the faint-hearted. Have you actually tried it?
Not that particular turn, but when cycling I do the "no right turn except for cycles" from Lichfield Road into Riverway, I sometimes will signal and pull out to overtake other cyclists, and I do the right turn Lichfield Road into Silkmore Lane which involves getting out of the cycle lane across to the right hand lane. They're all interesting manoeuvres!!! Providing you look properly, signal and definite about what you're doing its fine...

There seems to be traffic jams everywhere from about a month ago. I don't know what is happening but it is a problem to get to Sainsburys and Tescos. When I am crossing the road I am still looking for the green man in front of me instead of at the side. I don't like the new system. Why are there so many traffic jams at the moment?

I found out yesterday, the borough council has a traffic light scheme which builders have to chip into if the want to extend car parks etc.... And they have this scheme for traffic calming.

I find this a complete load of bollocks. The sheers amount of traffic lights in town are really starting to p*ss me off. At sainsburies, there are three pedestrian traffic lights. With the amount of fat people in town youde think you could give them some exercise by walking 20 metres up the road to cross. And if they jaywalk and get run over, so em.

Does anyone know if our traffic lights are connected up to a central computer system?

The new lights at Sainsburys/Wilkos are now effectively Stop Lights as opposed to the Pelican Crossing, this actually makes is safer as the instruction are simpler ie the flashing amber is somewhat ambiguous. Also the new stop light gives about 3 times the time to cross the road, this is very important as at it's busiest 50+ pedestrians are crossing the road at one time........

Thats it though, its all done under the guise of "safety improvements" but why should we spend money on safety measures to protect people who are too thick to cross a road safely. Surely this is natural selection coming into play.

Yes. This central computer system is located in a small room at the Staffordshire County Council Highway Offices on Riverway. This is the same place that all of the information signs around Stafford and the CCTV cameras are monitored from. All of the traffic lights can, if operators choose to do so, be adjusted remotely from Riverway depending on peak flows, exception traffic, motorway incidents etc etc.

???

The borough council isn't a highway authority.

Do pedestrians have less rights than drivers then?

Yes, they are.

Between now and crimbo it could see in excess of 100 cross at any one time. The new system goes to 'red man' and allows enough time for an elderly person or someone with small children to cross safely. Or are less able/mobile people also thick ......

Yep, the newer type pedestrian crossings are fitted with motion detectors so they can hold the lights red for longer if people are still crossing.
