John Marwood

I ♥ cryptic crosswords
Can anyone seriously see an 'arthouse' cinema working in little conservative Stafford?

Famed for its prudence and resistance to la change, it would have to be two seater booth to achieve a 50% capacity rating

I'd love an art house cinema, but I'm afraid mr Marwood has got it spot on again.

In cities successful art house cinemas tend to be bijou & quirky - there is nothing bijou & quirky about the allied carpets building.

Enjoying a drop of red.
An Art-House cinema in Stafford will be about as successful as a Vegan restaurant or a Cider pub would be. But then what choice do they have as the new cinema will inevitably slaughter them on the mainstream front.

I'd love to say they could try charging a fair amount per ticket, but that means not showing any big name movies.

I'm pretty sure Curzon, the Apollo's new owners - will be showing a mix of things, especially with the Film Theater, previously at the gate house, moving there.

They already do pretty well showing Live National Theater productions, West end productions & opera. We noticed yesterday that Google has started listing it as Curzon, who it's self are branding it as 'The Stafford Cinema' - http://www.thestaffordcinema.com/

Sorry Chann...no idea, only know that they had a very good reputation until something appeared to go very wrong.
Hope things improve for them.

They got new signs, something to do with milkshakes, then seemed to close almost immediately. Were they linked to the one at the hospital?

The Tanning Shop Stafford

A few posts under my belt
I thought there was a thread for new shops etc, sorry to admin but I could not find out.

Thought I'd seperate this as it seems to be on the closed shops thread alot.

New shops coming-

-British Heart Foundation, Electrical/ Furniture Store at 12 and 13 Princess Street (old card and Farmfoods Shops)
-Stafford Photo Shop- Salter Street (Direct Specs)
-Walter Mill- is reopening as something again I hear.
- as is another premises at the top of Mill Street a bit down from GMB, women's clothes shop I hear?
-Furniture Place next to Sun Inn which has closed to alleged severe rent arrears will be taken over by a care team company.
-Esprei on Martin Street has been sold ??
-old Ethel Austin is being decked out as we speak into a very stylish looking furniture and rug store.
-old Pelo is going to open up, do not know as what but it is not Costa Coffee.
-most of the ground floor shops at the new council buildings will open in the new year.

Rumor:
-Revolution at Chicago Rock??
-GAP at building next to Toni and Guy, although work seems to have stopped on that??
-Chambers/ Victoria Chambers??

The Tanning Shop has now opened in the old PELO unit. It is a national chain of sunbed and spray tan shops
Brilliant new equipment and lovely staff. Fair prices too

IIRC charity shops don't pay rates? Makes these premises a lot more appealing, when normal shops can't make ends meet.

But there is only a finite amount of second hand stuff getting donated, if one gains it is only through the loss of another.
