Newport Road closure & Traffic in Stafford

My very first post!

Basically I live on Western Downs, and who ever decieded to close the Newport Road for 10 weeks needs sacking!
I work on the Stafford Technology Park and its taking me 1hr 20mins to get work and 1hr to get home!

Ive noticed Stafford getting worse traffic wise for the last couple of months and this is before the Newport Road closure, but now it seriously can not cope.

What ever time you go out, what ever day, you will be in a Jam for at least 20mins. I have no idea why or how come Stafford is so bad for traffic but it is terrible.

Ive worked all over the UK and even London was not this bad for constant traffic.

Looking at it I think it is loosely based on the two motorway junctions and also the fact nearly all traffic is directed towards town to get to its destination.

Also have Stafford Council got a deal with Lex who produce traffic lights! There must be more sets in Stafford that anywhere else in the Midlands!

Stafford needs a serious sort out road wise, before anything else is built (i.e multiplex on old Riverside site etc etc)

On a side note, brillant position for the new riverside! Flooded already! At least they will be able to fill the pool for free!

I'll jump off my soap box now, opions or other stories welcome! :)

Why not go down west way to end, turn right and then carry on to Silkmore turn left on Silkmore (flood permitting) then go to end, go up to Baswich, down back lanes through to and past crem then turn left at weston road. Failing that walk to town and get a bus, not only quicker but cheaper.

Hi
Tried that route and it took 50mins, also Baswich bridge was closed the other day.
West Way is just one long traffic jam waiting to get onto Wolverhampton Road.

Also tried walking to bus Stop, and that took 48mins. Bus got stuck in traffic.

Im going to try biking it this week!

Its awful pop80 and it will only get worse; but, if the powers that be are to believed, the work on Newport Road needed to be done. It isn't aimless road digging, it's putting in essential services for the new estate, and they reasoned that the best time to do it would be in the summer, when the traffic will be less.

The only answer is for us to get on bikes and/or public transport. I cycle to work from Wolverhampton road to the firestation, it takes me just over ten minutes, it would take me 30 mins in a car.

I apologise in advance to anyone who is unable to use a bike for any reason, I am not trying to be trite. Stafford roads are an insoluble problem in my opinion, that can not be built out of. We have to change behaviour. More accomodation building in the town will increase traffic, so we are going to have to be creative to resolve the chaos that will ensue.

Better than 1hr 20 but still too long. As gone2seed says, bike it, probably the best way. Even walking. Used to take me 45mins to walk from Highfields Spar to the Rec then it would probably be 20mins on top for you. You'd be healthier, fitter what more could you want. Then you would know exactly how long it takes only relying on y'self. Personally I would still be peeved about roadworks and wanna take me car.

Just a point I want to keep making I guess. There are two Council's and people get them confused. Roads are done by Staffordshire County Council which is the big council who have buildings all over the place - mainly in the Martin Street area (at the back of the library/ gallery), They are the ones who do all the schools and social services and stuff too. Stafford Borough Council does bins, environmental health (such as noise complaints to be topical), leisure (like the new lesiure centre - the old one floods even earlier by the way) and planning. They are in the big brick building by the river.

People just refere to the council for these things and then don't know who to complain to. Then when it comes to voting just get issues confused. If your miffed about roads it's useless to vote on that issue in the Borough Council elections or complain to your Borough Councillors, if your miffed about recycling boxes don't use it as an issue when voting in County elections or talking to your County Coucillor. It gets you nowhere - worse still is you think you've made your point when you haven't - particularly talking to councillors who will waffle on and try to seem like they can do something so they get your vote when actually they can't do a thing unless you get the one from the right council. I hope that makes sense.
