Norton Bridge Recycling Centre, near Eccleshall - Katherine House Hospice

Firstly, I am aware that this is a charity and support it 100% but find the price very expensive.

I do visit to see what they have in, and to be honest, the prices are ridiculous.

Would it not be better for them to sell at a reasonable price and turn more stock over, which in turn would generate more income for the charity, and popularity, rather than over inflating the prices and have it sitting around for weeks, even months in some cases.

Also, there is no clarity on prices, I went in and saw a piece of furniture and asked for the price, which to my surprise was not bad (£10) I went home to measure up, and thought great, it will go, so went back a few hours later to purchase, to then discover the price has shot up to £35.00 I explained I was told it was £10.00. OMG the attitude!

I thought they were representing a charity here, not very good advertising.

I find that the Katherine House Hospice near Stafford Recycling Centre can be much the same. They are very choosy over what items they take as the place is so rammed with stuff. Again though, so much of it is overpriced.

I totally agree with you. Sell it cheap, even accept offers, get it gone and take in more!

The one on Aston Fields is better, I find the Norton Bridge branch is where they send furniture to die....

The break unsold furniture up and chuck it, they would rather throw it than give it for free/ small amount.

Before it had its 'makeover' there were some real bargains to be had!

I wasn't actually aware of the Norton Bridge one, but may skip bothering anyway as even the pictures on their website make it look worse than the Stafford unit.

Everyone forgets that it is a business at the end of the day.....

A business that relies on donations, everything single item in the shops has cost them nothing, nill, zero!

Thus every penny they sell it for is pure profit!

So when they prefer to chuck perfectly good items rather than have a bit of a banter and bargain, shift things quickly rather than refusing due to lack of space it seems crazy to me!

Although I have to give them massive kudos for the work they do, Stafford has such an amazing second hand market, so many lovely pieces of furniture in one place!

Recycling at it's best!

Agree with all that has been said above, too rich for me to bother...... most of the time you can get brand new stuff delivered for less.

Its the same with charity shops since the introduction of Primark and the like.... most won't bother getting second hand when they can get brand new for the same price. I understand Primark is shite quality but many people worship the place, the poor souls.

I do remember once that I forgot to put in my post. I saw a small pine bookcase, plyboard back, nothing special, it was scratched, and in bad shape, and I mean bad shape, saw a ticket that said £35.00.!!!

So that will be why I found a boxed complete Scalextric set for a tenner 2 weeks ago...??

Their prices the shops sell the goods at are different depending on which one you go to but I've found absolute bargains at every one Ive been to...as littleme says they are there to make a profit....

If you think that place is dear you'd best stay clear of the Eccleshall shop....

It may depend upon the sort of thing you're after, but I've had many items that I wouldn't even consider purchasing new - this week, for example, I bought a Hermle Granddaughter clock for £75, almost new and just needing a simple repair. No way would I have considered paying the going rate of around £1,500 for it...

There are plenty of other similar examples. If you don't like the price, then don't buy it. If you think it's too much, then just leave it and go back after a bit, stuff often gets dropped if it isn't moving - but, if somebody else has bought it, then maybe it wasn't too much..?

It is real recycling, most of this stuff is unsaleable on a personal basis, without considerable effort, that people may not be in a position to do.

They are in it for the money, of course, though it's for a good cause and they do have some overheads, such as premises, vehicles, etc...

Dont be daft there are plenty of over paid managers wages to pay and their prestige cars. They dont do it for free you know! Soneones gotta make a stack even if it is through a charity.

I think it depends on what you're looking for, we recently picked up a very smart leather topped writing desk, perfect for what we were looking for and £40 cheaper then a new desk would have been, and much, much nicer. Not been to the Norton Bridge one, but we've found some gems in the Stafford Warehouse - and it's always the first place we check out if we need furniture for whatever reason.

What annoys me the most about Katherine House is the items that they choose to throw away rather than resell. People have been good enough to donate them to charity expecting something good to come from them, so even if it's 50p, every effort should be made to ensuring a sale.

But as a buyer in general, where else is there to buy the type of items the kind people of Stafford donate to the charity apart from the car boot?

This item has been in Norton Bridge since September, I think - what is it? And why does it have one piece of actual wood and the rest chipboard?
