CommunityInvolvement

A few posts under my belt
Hi all

Just some info on a new task group that has been set up in Stafford to help residents of Penkside (Silkmore and Rickerscote areas) gain employment.

Residents in Penkside are being offered a helping hand to step onto the careers ladder.

A new employment opportunities task group has been set up to help job hunters gain the skills needed to impress employers.

The task group is setting up a jobs club that will provide courses on CV writing, interview skills, effective job searching, presentation skills and basic IT over the next six months.

They are also looking at providing courses such as basic health and safety, health and hygiene and an introduction to care work.

The task group is a partnership of Staffordand Rural Homes, Stafford Works, Stafford Borough Council, Staffordshire and District Voluntary Services, Staffordshire County Council’s Library Service and Job Centre Plus.

Chris Plant, Community Involvement Manager withStaffordand Rural Homes, said: “We want this to be community focused, with residents shaping what services we deliver and where.

“It will offer support and skills to help people compete in a tough jobs market.”

The task group is one of four set up under the Penkside Project, which is about finding out what the community needs and wants in the area.

The Penkside Project is made up of community members and various agencies including Stafford Borough Council (SBC),Staffordand Rural Homes (SARH), Staffordshire County Council (SCC), Staffordshire District Voluntary Services (SDVS), South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust (PCT), and Jobcentre Plus.

Penkside is one of three wards chosen from the whole of Staffordshire to benefit from funding that has been made available from Learning To Deliver to help improve the area and address any inequalities such as health and well-being of children and families and access to employment.

For more information about the task group please contact Chris Plant at SARH on 0800 111 4554

That's great if 1, you need those skills 2, you plan to use them, most folk around here either have a job or don't particularly want one and 3, want to do the kind of work you are offering. I know you can't cater for everyone but thanks for trying anyway.
Sadly though i don't think you are going to get many takers.

Apologies for the late response

The activities to be delivered in the Silkmore and Rickerscote communities that make up the Penkside Project area will be free to attend. However,Stafford and Rural Homes hold a Job Club every Monday morning at their Community Resource Centre in Greyfriars, Stafford. This is free and open to anyone. The Job Club is run by experts who offer help with searching for jobs, writing CVs and interview skills.

For more information please contact the Community Involvement Team on 0800 111 4554.

Stafford and stone citizens advice are also working in the penkside community the CAB delivers a drop in service and the silkmore childrens centre every thursday morning 9 o.clock till 12.clock.

The service is to help the penkside residents deal with debts - benefit - housing. employment and family matters. The centre is a hub for accessing services to do with children.

DEBTS are one of the main causes of stress, the bureau can help by putting a hold on bailiffs until an affordable payment plan can be worked out- the bureau can advice about trust fund applications for fuel and water debts. Drop in to chat to the adviser and have a coffee at the comminity cafe. The CAB also does a outreach drop in service at Singpost centre in Highfields 0n the first three Thursdays of the month and at stafford borough council civic offices every tuesday 10 til 12.

I always get concerned about initiatives like this, i.e. what the uptake will be vs the cost of running. Many, many community projects start like this then disappear into the ether due to lack of community involvement/motivation (call it what you will). Not saying it's not admirable or useful to some, of course.
