Be careful though shoes only the original will work with the factory industry standard immobiliser fitted in the car, unless you are willing to pay through the nose for a new key which has the same immobiliser chip fitted...tried the same trick on my gf's car...eventually had to disconnect the immobiliser which took F***ING hours yesterday in the freezing cold.....

If leaving a bike for a long period you really do need to get something that is mechanically sound but looks like sh*t. Paint it pink for the ultimate in thief-proofing :)

But make sure that you don't just then give it away to some bloke on the Queensville bridge on your way home after a long and intensive evening at the PandA House...

Talking of which, there's a couple of bikes that have been locked up to posts for a while now. One along Baswich Lane and another near the bus shelter at the technology park.

Are they abandoned?

Unfortunately no, he hadn't locked it. Put it in someones front yard and was in the house less than 2 minutes, but as we all know it takes a lot less than that to rob a bike :(
Ouch. I wouldn't leave my keys in the car with the engine running which is the equivalent situation

Insurance won't pay out either.
Aye, the car I just bought only has one key which means I need to either stand outside whilst it warms/defrosts or get another key so I can start it and then lock it in the morning.
My car won't lock with a signal from the second key if the first is in the ignition. It will lock if you poke the catch on the door switch, but won't then unlock with a signal from the second key, so that's no advantage. I will try to mechanically lock and open the door with the second key tomorrow ( I didn't want to do it now, in case I set the alarm off ) and the first key in the ignition - I will do it with window open, just in case.

Might be worth making sure it will work with your flash new car before you cough up for a spare key, if that's all you want it for.

If it's a diesel there's bugger all point trying to pre-warm it. It doesn't work like it does for a petrol as diesel engines are more efficient so give off less heat. The best thing you can do is clear the windows, drive with as much of the electricals on as possible. Full beam, radio, rear demister will place additional load on the engine.

A diesel may be a touch more efficient than a petrol engine and, perhaps, a bit heavier, resulting in a slightly longer warming-up time, but I wouldn't expect there to be much in it, really.

I think this thread has some cross-wires somewhere. Since when have we been talking about Diesels? :?:

...but for the record, mine has a Webasto heater, which burns diesel to warm the engine up without any load, if required for a really cold morning.

It goes back to the 'was it locked?' question and arrived here via the 'don't get your car nicked whilst it's warming up' warning.

Does it really warm the engine up? Or does it burn fuel directly in a heat-exchanger to provide hot air to the blower without having to wait for a large mass to heat up?

It may vary for other models, but this FAQ mentions that the VW TDI won't warm up idling.

http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-2.html#b

"Because the TDI engine is so efficient, it puts less heat into the cooling system than comparable gasoline engines. A TDI engine will not reach operating temperature by idling. There is no point starting the car a few minutes before you plan to use it in order to have a warm interior - it isn't going to happen. Heated seats are definitely a worthwhile option for those living in a cold climate!"

According to the manual, it puts warmth into the cooling unit and reduces wear on the engine in extremely cold weather. Whether they're making it up or not is another thing.
Also in my manual, it recommends to idle the engine for a few moments after starting it for the first time after leaving for a period - overnight etc. Maybe so the oil has chance to spread itself??

Pikeys at the back of corporation st getting things from inside peoples gardens!

Edit: they've now gone. A battered microwave was taken. I'm assuming it was scrap, but they shouldn't be looking over gardens and climbing over fences in my opinion. The last guy I saw doing that is now imprisoned.

If there is a turbo-charger, then idling for a period at start-up, and shut-down, is certainly a good idea.

Should have give the doughnut patrol a call mate, thats well out of order....

My sister in law got a custom made fire pit / BBQ made for her by a friend who works in the metal industry... one night they left it out to cool in the back yard, went to work the next day and the scrap man (or a.n.other pikey twunt) stole it..... from a secure gated back yard...
