Planning and traffic in Stafford.... terrible?

Surely at most signalised junctions you drive past a red light when turning right - the one that stops traffic coming from your left and right and careering into you . It isn't difficult!!

Indeed. Although the light on Corporation Street is a long way round the corner, due to the strange slip-road affair there and confusion does happen - the railings do also make it look even more like a crossing...

Corporation Street is the example I've seen most of people coming to a halt half way through a junction. It makes me wonder how many people drive around in a complete daze - and how the hell they passed their tests.

This junction is not as simple as this! You actually turn right past the red light ("the one that stops traffic coming from your left and right and careering into you") and then there is another red light for a pedestrian crossing that is also on red (not showing the green man for pedestrians) Check it out if you are in the area and you will see what I mean. I don't know the Corporation St junction so can't comment . The junction I am talking about is where you turn right from Rickerscote Road onto the Wolverhampton road and the pedestrian lights are at the corner of Churchill Way

The red light isn't for the pedestrian crossing, the red light is for traffic wanting to travel straight ahead along the A449. Traffic turning right actually has a special arrow shaped green light, and the pedestrian crossing has the usual green/red man.
It's a perfectly normal right turn junction with incorporated crossing seen at hundreds of locations across the UK. Pedestrians are only given the green light to cross when all traffic in all directions is at a halt.

What I don't get is why we need traffic lights on a34 queensway for the car park behinds m&s there's no need for them I've never ever seen that cause congestion. Too many traffic lights and too much poor planning.

EDIT; actually, what's being built on the opposite side? Is it a housing estate? Surely a bridge would of sufficed if a pedestrian crossing was needed. Putting lights on our busiest roads will surely only cause more problems?

They're really there to provide access to the St George's development eventually. Having said that, I've been stopped, completely unnecessarily, on three out of my four journeys through them since they became operational..

The other thing is the council need to make people aware of new lights. There's going to be drivers who won't spot them, I know I nearly missed them a couple times! An accident is bound to happen, I should hope not though.

Won't that junction also where you access the supposedly new Morrisons and multi storey car park were getting?

Indeed - I wonder if we could have just left bags over the lights until they actually become useful to the traffic flow..?

I did think that when driving through yesterday, the only advantage now is I assume you can turn right out of northwalls car park.

Indeed, but when I've been stopped, heading southbound, it's been to let cars turn left out of the car-park - so, I've just sat there , watching the lights change colour for no purpose..

Same thing often happens at the Prospect Road/Corporation Street/Crooked Bridge Road lights - the lights are so far round the corner when turning left that it can seem like one has approached a distinct crossing..

Somewhere else that happens a lot is the Weston Rd/Corporation Street/Lammascote Rd/Riverway crossroads - I've seen loads of people turn right off the Weston Rd into Riverway then slam their brakes on at the red light just round the corner (which only applies to the traffic coming out of Corporation Street...)

What i find farcical about the new junction at Queensway is that it will need to be altered once the Morrisons has been built. The newly erected lights and road layout have been designed to provide access to the ST Georges development primarily and therefore the access road to what is the now the North Walls car park hasnt really changed, but will need to, to enable the large heavy goods vehicles access the site for deliveries etc. Once this work is done it will looking something more closely aligned to the picture above.

I'm really surprised that you have nearly missed the traffic lights as they have been working on the junction for the last 6 months.

I am aware it will make no difference to anyone but I have now stopped going into Stafford to shop . As I have to gointo Stoke and Cannock weekly I shop there , Staffords roads (anddrivers) are appalling
