Pond needs cleaning, know anyone?

Just had a call from my brother, he found a sturgeon on the path. Its about 2 feet from the waters edge and the other side of some plant pots so doubt it jumped, doesn't have a mark on it though apparently. There is netting around the edges too, so must have been had from above. Also says he can't see any other fish in there other than the large gold one, there is a weed patch at the back they like to hide in but you can usually see a few.

Guess I may not bother restocking again til I can get a full net to cover it, bah :(

Do herons really eat that much? There were 4 fish over 8" long in there, and over a dozen 3" fish. Seems a lot for one bird :(

That's assuming it was indeed one bird.... but it's surprising what they can eat (i've watched one in action before)

Definitely get a full net before you re-stock like you have said.

:D

Another forum have also suggested otters, and mink released from farms. Think I might be getting stalked, as we have both on the marshes AFAIK and its pretty near my house.

EDIT: So if I chain up fluffy bunny babies around the pond....

Saw this in one of those interminable catalogues you get inundated with when you so much as think about buying something from a catalogue.

It is one of those products you only ever see in catalogues that you think might just work yet secretly suspect won't. There does seem to be some method in the idea.

There's pond-related stiff in Lidl - in Port Laoise there is, anyway, but might be worth a look in Stafford as well. UV filter, plant baskets, that sort of thing.

Had a call last night to say a mate had some fish going, friend of his mums I believe and they all had to go last night. Great I thought, 10 free ghost koi. Then they arrived, and most were over a foot long. No way I could easily fit them in my pond, had the smallest two but the others wouldn't do very well.

So 2 lovely new fish, but you should have seen the ones that got away!

Paul's fish went to a new owner only the day before yesterday, who agreed a bulk deal price on the entire lot. Any link d'ya think?

No idea, my mate mentioned something about a load breeding but was weird they ditched all the large ghosts. Could be related, yeah. Pond looks a bit of a mess now, had let the weed regrow as the fish were hiding under it (well, the few that survived anyway). Now with added nets its not pretty, but the fish should survive.

More pond related problems!

UV no longer functions, and the water has gone rather murky. Not a problem I think, tis just the bulb. Trekked over to the Hollybush yesterday, got a new tube for it, still nowt at all. Tried the fuse, changed the plug etc. but still nowt, assuming the starter now. Can't get in though, off to find a slim security screwdriver to see if I can get it open. Any other ideas?

Just had an email off Hagen, apparently there is a trip switch located underneath that must be depressed for it to work. I didn't see that! I shall have another look tonight, bah!

I just had an email back off Paul and this is what he suggested you check... followed by the starter next.

I was testing it externally, didn't want to refit everything if the bulb didn't work. Now I know what to look for I can try again tonight, though it was a bit too dead! Hopefully be up and running again tonight then :)

Next project, or rather for next spring as I need to save money, is to raise the pond up by a few feet. Thinking 3' all the way round, double skin with a 8" gap for plants. Need a few hundred at least for that though, the liner alone will be £150-200. Need more depth, want bigger fish!

Tested with the switch and works fine. Back in place and filtering but not turned on the UV yet, gonna check its all sealed after a few hours running first.

UV still working :)

Also just won one of these on eBay for 99p, in case I need to empty it at all. Shouldn't need it, but worth a quid:
