but would be looking for a 4-bed or 3-bed + study with a garden (conservatory/utility would be a bonus)!
Given those requirements then I would definitely recommend Castlefields although that area is about 11 years old so may be too "new build" for you.

I think (but could be very wrong) that Castletown is all back to back terraced houses with 2 / 3 bedroom with a small yard rather than garden. As I say, could be wrong but they don't look big enough to be much else.

For decent gardens you need the outskirts, the closer to town you get the smaller the gardens. Any idea on your budget? Prices vary a lot by area. And when you want to move?

I will have to look up Castletown, which a few of you have mentioned, as I've generally been researching around Walton on the Hill. I like the look of Walton Hill High School and also Barnfields Primary School. Has anyone got any thoughts on these two schools? The Ofsted Reports I've read (albeit a few years' old) aren't exactly outstanding; more good-satisfactory. I'm concerned for our son who turns 11 in October, who would be commencing Yr 7 in September next year and I think he would be overwhelmed by a huge high school. He's quite small for his age, coupled with being the 'new kid on the block' with a different accent and no familiar friends, he'd be susceptible to bullying.
walton high school is arguably the best school in the area* - but of course i would say that, because i went there lol.. i think one of our newest forumites is actually a teacher there (or at least used to be), but seeing as she seemed to sign up here purely to spam about some climate-change propaganda related nonsense we may not hear from her again, which would be a shame..

one of my nephews has just started there this year, and so far he's loving it.. i'm quite interested to hear what it's like these days, so i'll be sure to tap him up for more info!

* let's not turn this into a "my school's better than your school" thread - there's a thread for that here: http://www.staffordforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=171 ;)

Kingston hill would certainly suit your housing requirements and some of the houses up here are suprisingly cheap (I have just moved into one for a silly price, I still think it was a misprint!!). You're also right next to Western Road High School (10 min walk if that) although I will leave the diussion of how good it is to those who know what they're talking about (I never attended nor do I have kids).

On the subject of schooling Stafford falls within the catchment area of Adams' Grammar and also Newport Girls High, both of which are exceptional selective schools independantly funded.

Kingston Hill, Castlefields? Whereabouts around Stafford are they?

I suppose our budget would be up to £300k, but that's the absolute ceiling and for that we'd be expecting some kind of large old cottage with a bit of land .... in reality, I don't want to be out in the sticks and ideally, I'd like the kids to be walking distance to school. Something under £249k, or even around £199k would be ideal.

We'd be looking at good county council schools; independents cost too much!

We're probably looking at moving next July, but am aware we'd need to submit applications to schools very soon - not quite sure how they handle the catchment area issue, if you're not yet in the country though!

Dirtybobby, would be interested in hearing what your nephew thinks of Walton High!

My parents are just about to put their house up, and it looks like the prices for 3 bed 1930's semi's with large gardens are around £190k at the moment, obviously that might go up slightly come July, but you should get plennty for your money.

Kingston Hill is near the hospital, houses are in the £220 - £300k region and literally 10 minute walk from Western Road High School and about the same from a primary by the hospital, I forget its name though. As for value for money, i rent and have no idea of real property worth lol

Adams' and Newports Girls High are both free to attend schools, Adams' is Haberdashery funded, not sure about NGH. I believe both are selective though.

Can't say about Kingston Hill but Castlefields is here:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?rlz=1C1GGLS_en-GBGB292GB303&sourceid=chrome&q=st16+1lz&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Stafford+ST16+1Ly&gl=uk&ei=uei5St3HMZDbjQfsjNn3BQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1

The four / five bed detatched's sell for about £230k - £300k depending on size.

About 5 / 10 mins walk from the town centre.

they're both nice areas, but they are very close to town and from what you have said i definitely think that walton, baswich or wildwood would be more up your street (as it were).. they are close enough to town (approx. 5 miles) to be convenient, but far enough away to allow decent plots of land, access to schools, etc. i grew up on walton and, later, wildwood, and my friends and i always walked to school - and i was a lazy little blighter, so it can't have been that far!

Walton Hill High School has a good catchment area and some very good feeder primary schools. However, according to Ofsted its results should be better than they are - seems to be coasting. Leasowes, and other primary schools near there are excellent. Sir Graham Balfour school is getting much better as is Weston Road. The Catholic High School has a notice to improve although it should be better than it is. Sports College is the worst. Many people come to Stafford and stay...

Lol sports college..... its basically saying academic studies are too much for the inbreds in our school so we teach them to kick balls into square holes and chant at each other in perparation for a lifetime of lager, 'reading' the sun and more chanting.

WHO ARE YA!?

I take offence at that Shoes, it's not all bad; I went there, as did my siblings, and we've all done very well for ourselves. The same with the majority of my 6th form peers. I always found, as no doubt everyone else did at whatever school they went to, if you want to learn you'll do well, if you don't you won't. The main issue with Riso is that deprevation of the majority of the catchment area.

Oooh, thanks everyone ... I've been in Oz for 12 years, but I'm actually from Leek originally, though I used to have German lessons with a lovely lady on the Parkside estate and worked at Schott Glass for 3 weeks in the 90s (are they still there?). So..... would like to be closer to family, but also somewhere a bit different with good infrastructure (ie close to motorway), a safe environment to bring up kids, neutral accent, close to the countryside for walks/bike rides, good supermarkets (Tescos and/or Aldi)....

I will have to look up Castletown, which a few of you have mentioned, as I've generally been researching around Walton on the Hill. As for our housing budget, I'd say we might have to rent for a while, but would be looking for a 4-bed or 3-bed + study with a garden (conservatory/utility would be a bonus)! An older type house would be the go (ie, not a new-build).

It's a big wish list ... but then, we're making a big move and our kids' well-being is of utmost priority ...

Any more thoughts and tips, please let me know. Thanks!
Hi Alimay,

My hubby works in Schott Glass. He must have been there when you went. He used to work down the the warehouse, but now works in the offices. It is still there, but a lot of the building is now being rented out to other companies and they only have the one warehouse. The company shop outlet has gone as well. They don't sell the Chrystal glass any longer. It is mostly Lab-ware and Industrial glass. There must only be about 20 Schott Glass staff employed there now.He has been lucky to survive the several rounds of redundancy so far.

As to areas to live,I live on Wildwood and although we do have a few 'nutters' around lately it is still a nice area to be in.

My son went to Barnfields primary which he enjoyed and was doing really well in.When he left Barnfields, the teachers expected him to go on to do well.He now goes to Walton High School (now year 9) and although he seems to be enjoying it, his work has gone really down-hill in some subjects and no-one seems bothered about it! His best mate's dad ,who works for Ofsted, has taken him out of Walton and sent him to grammar school.
I went to Walton (I was actually the first year in when it opened)and came out passing all of my exams. But I don't think lately that it is living up to its reputation for being an excellent school.
I work as a catering assistant in Walton High School Kitchens and have seen some bullying .It has been a bit better since this new Head Master has been in charge but ,although the teachers say otherwise,I can assure you it is still going on.But there again, you will get bullying in most schools I suppose.

As to him being the 'new kid on the block'. The school has about 5 feeder schools and when they put them into the Tutor groups they mix them all up, and they are rarely with the same 'best friends 'as in primary. They soon make new mates from day one. They stay in the same Tutor group throughout their school life and new kids coming to the school are soon welcomed into the tutor groups. There are a few children with Australian,Canadian,New Zealand etc accents and they seem very popular with the others .

Hope I haven't put you off it now, just telling it how I see it!

Any more info I can help you with just ask.

Good luck

Anywhere in the Sir Graham Balfour catchment area. The 8th most improved school in England academically with fabulous new buildings.

IMO Walton WAS the best school, but is nowhere near as good as it was, I think it's resting on its fast diminishing reputation.

My mum works at Walton High School and i left there 5 years ago. I live round the corner from it, to the extent that i see it everyday i open my curtains! I also worked as a cleaner there whilst i did my degree!

I now work in Blessed William Howard Catholic High School. And with out stepping on any toe's or offending anyone.... I would STRONGLY recommend sending your kids to Walton as it is the best school in the area. Also, with the money your talking you could afford to live in Walton aswell.

Of course im not biased...

So come and be my neighbour....
