Primark replace Debenhams

Debenhams have pulled out of the Riverside development and they will be replaced by Primark.

Debenhams have stated that the development is no longer within their development timeframe amongst other quotes from Debenhams “we are still committed to gaining representation in Stafford but the new timeframes for Riverside are not in line with our development pipeline”

SBC CE states “We will be working with Debenhams to find the right opportunity for them to locate in our county town”
It also goes on to state that the Riverside development is now 80% full and the Kingsmead development (for Morrisons) is now FULL (with Just for Pets and B&M the only names released for now).

Personally Debenhams is a miss as I do not like Primark if the one in Hanley is anything to go by.

This next bit is only a rumor I have heard form a couple of people. Word is Debenhams are looking at taking up a large portion of the Guildhall, like I said this is only a rumor bouncing aorund.

i heard last year BHS were interested in taking up a large proportion of guild hall including HMV and JJB units then heard nothing since if debinhams take these units it could mean we get a Debenhams sooner and gain a primark.
this development was now so far behind schedule the Morrisons planning could lapse. they only have till February 2015 to start Morrison construction which they cant start until the multistory is built. it looking very tight

That is not the case at all, in fact morrisons is not due to start until early 2016 and not until the multi storey is complete as per agreement with SBC. In fact the kingsmead/ north walls area has had planning permitted to LXB for it to stay a car park for a 3 year period which ends late 2016.

right that makes sense i thought planning permissions usually have a three year time limit on them with the permission given in feb 2012. do we know when morrisons will be open for business?

Not sure, but lxb want to push it through. The buildings and houses at north walls will be knocked down to create a temporary car park as the marks and sparks site will start before the multi storey is complete

If Debenhams go into the Guildhall its bye bye to the market, cos that's where they would be going. Then the market would be squeezed in somewhere.

Would go the market it is not big enough, not even close. Would be if it took at least everything down that side at a minimum. Plus I do not think it is that easy as sbc put good money for that to be housed there when first built. That was a few years mind, but I cannot see this happening at all but would be a great spot for it.

If you took everything from the old JJB corner backwards it would probably be a pretty decent size for a Debenhams, the top floor could be expanded out quite easily I would think.

Not sure that Debenham's have a pot to p*ss in, see recent financial press. The lateness of development excuse sounds like it was a suitable get out of jail card. Would not be surprised to see same thing happen to Morrison's. Shame all those trees bit the dust on Kingsmead. Makes the St George's tree felling look trifling in comparison.

Fab, smallest child can wear all the trashy tat she wants :)
.

All the trashy tat at Primark that your youngest will wear is probably made by a child of the same age working a 14 hour day in Bangadesh/India for a few rupees a day.

So will primark be taking all 3 floors that were intended for debs or will the build be trimmed ?
how happy are m&s going to be having a very big primark next door?
could debs take the old m&s building ?
could waitrose take the old m&s building ?

If it is Primark, it will be another store that I won't go into.

Debenhams have confirmed a very large store in Wolverhampton, taking the old TJ Hughes area (maybe more?). This was announced only in the last couple of weeks about the same time they were pulling out of the Riverside development. So either they are in the mood for more expansion or they are just spinning a line.

Debenhams took on the 'old' TJ Hughes store in Lichfield and is quite a bit smaller than their normal sized stores ( the Owen Owen/ TJ Hughes store in W'hampton is much larger if they use all four floors) and the bottom end of the Guild Hall is a fair size when you take in the floor space of the stores and the concourse and would make a good conversion and being next to the car park can be self contained which is a requirement for retailers such as Debenhams who have late night shopping events.

I am gutted that we are not getting a Debenhams, a department store is exactly what this town needs to get visitors to the town.

Primark is just another cheap tat shop.

Even Cannock are upping their game with a planning application for a shopping village of 100 shops to include Paul Smith, Superdry, Ralph Lauren.

Ralph Lauren in Cannock I tell you.

And we have to make do with chavvy Peacocks and Primark.
