Pub closures

A friend was telling me today that the Coach & Horses is now closed, which is a shame, as I liked the place. I've also noticed recently that the Hogshead no longer appears to be open. And not that I've ever been in, but Shepherd's Bushes also appears to be shut. In addition, someone else told me today that the Castle Tavern is no longer open during the day, only at nighttime.

My friend reckons town is dead on Friday nights, and the only people who are around seem to be our age (mid-thirties), so he doesn't know where the younger people are going! I don't get out much myself, but I'm curious to hear whether other forum users share my friend's view, that the pub scene around town seems to have gone very quiet. And are there any more closures to add to the list?

Is it possible that the whole world is coming to an end? Why don't you get out much? Are you subjected to a domestic tyranny? The King's Arms had some highly inebriated patrons this evening - so I am led to believe.

Yes, domestic tyranny. How did you know?!

I like the King's Arms, now that it's being run by people who know how to run a pub.

Is The Lamb still shut?
The Lamb is open, but not very busy.

The Lamb is being run by Fran and Gary, formerly of the Bird. They also hold the tenancy on the Kings Arms, but have Steve and Becky running it (their assistants at the Bird).

Didn't realise the Coach had gone, my auntie used to run that many years ago. Lets hope it doesn't get demolished to make way for more shitty flats :(

i'm pretty sure the castle tavern is open as usual.. they just had a bit of a refit, so maybe that's why it looked closed..

ash from the tavern is a user of this forum, and he announced the changes in this thread here :)

The Star and Garter has new owners, but they can't get in yet due to the previous owner's 'tax trouble'...

You mean 'Kingdom Everything'? Hadn't noticed TBH, wasn't his main income from his loan business?
Have a look at this. It seems to include almost everything you could ever want. Finance, nurseries, a music venue, limousine hire and something to do with shoes (!), but I 'don't have authority to access' that.

When I went past the Coach and Horses this morning the downstairs lights were all on - if that means anything. And there's still barrels in the yard.

Noticed that the Kingdom Everything complex has a big To Let / For Sale sign outside of it. Wonder if that includes the neon?

I've heard a viscous rumours that the lynton tavern on weeping cross is being turned into a health centre, some irony there i feel. But fear not the locals are threatening to chain themselves to the outside.

One of the pubs on Eccleshall High Street, the Crown, I think, already is a doctors' surgery, so the precedent is there.

Oh, and beware of those 'viscous rumours', they can stick, you know.

Are the Lamb, Bushes, Kings Arms and Rifleman in a temporary special deal with Punch by a group called Abbey Holdings. If you log on to Punchpubs.co.uk you will see that all four are available on a 5year short tenancy.
Rifleman £15,570
Lamb £15,570
Bushes £17,020
KingsArms £20,520
Also the Lynton is seen as an investment opportunity for £65,196

The Punch site claims that the Shepherds' Bushes is "surrounded by chimney pots". Eh?

just received Feb issue of 'what's brewing' from CAMRA. There is a growing practice of brewers and pubcos imposing restrictive covenants on up-for-sale properties to stop them from being used as pubs in the future. They do it in areas that they believe are over pubbed, to protect their other pubs. One could suggest that the north end is overpubbed and maybe the Waggon and the New Vic may be about to be given a restrictive covenant. Are these two pubs really missed?? does anyone care now after such a long closure time?? Any thoughts?
