Wanted rat cage?

Hi Lottie, we have one very large rat cage that we no longer use. It's black and has a tray underneath that you can pull out to clean. It has two doors at the front, two platforms and two ladders (though these are removeable). It's also on wheels.

It's big enough to house six rats at most I would say. We bought it for just under £200 but would be happy for less. Let me know if you're interested :)

Hello fellow rat lovers!

I haven't got anything I'm afraid but the above offer sounds great!

If you don't have any luck try Preloved - its always great for small furry stuff :)

I'm actually looking at building my own as the fat lads are getting bigger and the current cage will soon be a bit small.

Quite often parrot or bird cages are great as rat cages and can be cheaper, bigger, more practical and easy to accessorize!
The best cage I ever had was a Furret Abode Tower - I think that's what it was called lol and was for parrots!

I used parrot cages before too. Although there is alot of pleasure to be had from building your own like Toble has suggested.
If you find one with enough space, I've also used fish tanks and made a tight fitting mesh lid for those before - the advantage being that it keeps the wood shavings inside! If you should go this way though, please do ensure the lid allows the full opening to be meshed allowing the rat to breathe, and think carefully about placement - these can't be sited right next to a radiator for obvious reasons.

And then bigger...

Got to love 'em though! I can't understand anyone being scared of a rat. Serious note to anyone reading this thread thinking of getting a small pet for their kid.... The rat is actually the cleanest and friendliest of all small pets - fact! The only way a rat would ever bite you is if you hurt it. Unlike hamsters, the small pet most commonly chosen, and the most viscous creatures I know as they bite you just for the hell of it.

Very true! Of all the rats I've had over the years I have only ever been bitten a handful of times - and for good reason!
Where as a child I remember being savaged by my hamster for nothing!

DIY cage idea #1... (from something I've done in the past)
A 1' x 1' x 3' fish tank with a mesh top, as suggested above. I use the 1cm mesh screening from B&Q, but instead of having a flat top I build them quite tall. One was about 5' tall with lots of levels and platforms made from dowel and hardboard.
I used split-ring washers from an old LRP armour project to join the sheets of mesh, making it a ramshackle affair, but it worked.

Sounds good - the only thing I'd say is using wood/ hardboard after a while it stinks to high heaven - impossible to clean and you just cant get the smell out - goes all brown and squishy!

I've used one of these before as shelves: http://www.diy.com/nav/rooms/storag...k-W-610-H-1310-D-300mm-9796509?skuId=10187214

Just use the individual plastic bits, drill holes in the corners and cable tie in - easy to wipe clean and can be taken out/ moved around as required!

The wooden bits are cheap enough to replace.

Those shelves could be made into one awesome giant cage.
