Reclaiming bank charges...

Has anyone actually gone through this process yet?? I caught Martin Lewis from MoneySavingExpert.com briefly this morning on The Wright Stuff (C5), and he was again urging people to continue threatening their banks with court action over their extortionate fees. Since the emergence of the possibility of getting some money out of the banks for once there have been a few cases which have reached the court stage and the claimants have lost the case, but he still reckons 99% of the time you will get your money....even if it's a little less than you'd expected. I'm just about to do this, as over the years I have been charged a fortune (largely through mismanagement of my finances) and I WANT IT BACK!!

Hmm

Have been at this for a while actually ..numerous over the top charges and the like.

If you dig about you can see people making all sorts of claims ..and it seems winning !

As soon as I hear that someone's got some money out of my bank (Sproggit and Sylvester, Fry and Laurie fans), there will be a letter zipping off to them demanding my bank statements for the last 6 years, under the Data Protection Act.
Then their arse is mine. :D

I got £125 back from HSBC didn't even write just when in and asked for a list of charges in the last five years, they offered me half the amount of the charges which I accepted - didn't realise I had been charged quite so many times! :)

An old lady i know, who is 80 has her pension paid into her bank account, and the bank charged her 40 quid, and said it was for an unpaid direct debit.
She knew this was wrong as she has no direct debits.
so on the tuesday she had no pension because the bank took the charges out, plus 20 quid admistration charges.
I took her to the the CAB and HSB would not communicate with them at all.
So i rang Midlands Today and the sentinal, and hey presto! HSB rang her up offering her all the money back plus 200 pounds for the stress she had!.
just goes to show if you cant get them to do the right thing, then get the media to contact them.

There have been a load of threads about this on various forums I frequent.. I've read about so many people being successful, some with major payouts (I mean 4 figures!) without too much hassle.

I'm in the process of it now, just had first reply from mbna and they've offered to refund half of the charges. Thats almost £200 quid.

A guy I work worth phoned a company on the 26th June to ask them about reclaiming charges, they took his details and sent his bank a letter, if the bank does not respond after four weeks they take it further (and then take a cut, I think) but his bank responded within 10days and their first offer was £2000!!!! Of course he is over the moon, I've asked him for the details of this firm and I'll post it here when he lets me have them. All he did was make a phone call and gets 2k!!!!!

ive heard that these companies are shafting people - they take the hassle out of the process but then take a ridiculous cut for the pleasure.
all it takes is to download template letters and follow instructions on http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-charges or http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/

doesnt take much effort and you get to keep all your own money.

im just waiting for the second letter from them.

a girl who works for me just got £1500.00

heed rich's advice.. i am literally the laziest person alive, yet i managed to reclaim my own charges without the intervention of some third party rinse-merchants.. you don't even have to write your own letters or anything - just download the templates from the links in rich's post, send them on, wait for the money.. simple as that..

and do not settle for an "offer".. it might sound great when they offer to pay you back £2000 rather than the full amount you're owed, but there is a reason why they offer you this - they know that if you persevere you will win.. they will try and make it sound otherwise, and try and convince you that you won't win.. it is nonsense.. you will..

If you all write me a cheque for a penny that would be the princely sum of £6.30. Come on then! Lets do it!
