Renault Clio - Lower Ball Joint Nut and Bolt

Don't hate me, hate my car.

I've just replaced the reluctor ring (thanks all for suggesting a breaker's bar, by the way) but when I went to tighten the lower ball joint nut and bolt, one got quite tight but then continued to turn. Presumably, the thread has gone on either the nut or bolt, or both.

Looking online, I can only see whole kits (which includes the whole of the lower ball joint, but that seems unnecessary expense. So, am I being naive / thick (or both) if I ask whether I can just buy a M12 bolt and nut - it doesn't have to be from a Renault dealer or be advertised to be used on a car only? Say from any DIY shop? Cheers folks.

Can you see the head of the bolt? It may carry a code that alludes to the actual material used.

You may 'need' a bolt of specific dimensions, if they are using the unthreaded portion as a 'dowel'.

If it is the nut that has stripped, you may be able to split it, remove it and redeem the bolt.

I've been on Youtube and seen somebody replacing their reluctor (they replaced the whole shaft so they had replacement nuts and bolts with their kit) and they mention that they're 18mm nuts. I've also checked a few Renault forums and they also back this up, but nobody seems to have asked whether they're just usual nuts and bolts........that is until now :)
