Residential parking permits to be introduced in streets near Stafford town centre

Why not have a complete exclusion zone of say 1 mile from the edges of the town centre (such as it is) and make the whole area residents parking only? The only way to stop people trying to avoid car parking charges is to apply residents parking only universally over a whole area. Selecting just a few streets just moves the issue. If there was nowhere these people could leave their car for 8 hours or more a day within a mile walk of their destination, (town or the train station I'd imagine), pretty sure most of them would find another way in to town or pay for a car park.

In London huge swathes of the place are residents only parking and to get vouchers even as a resident costs. My sister lives in Finsbury Park yet she would have to pay for parking vouchers if she had a car and needed to park in her own street. These are purchased from islington Council, and they are required every single day of the year except Christmas Day. Scheme works well and focuses the mind as to whether it's worth having a car at all, what with the cost of parking and lack of parking outside one's own street.

With the growth in car numbers and number of commuters coming to live in the new dormitary town of Stafford we'll be seeing something like this very soon.

Why not hovver in beer barrels from drones?

Why not have the MOD site as a mass car park with horse and carriage entry to the ancient gates of our town

Why not use underground sewers and canoe into the centre of town - emerging at the baths for a quick connemara shower

Having been not far from there this weekend and used a visitor permit it does work well, I agree although one isn't needed on a Sunday), but the decision to have a car in London is completely different to having one in anywhere else, given the rest of the country doesn't have an integrated transport policy.

Really?

I hardly think you can compare London, with all its many public transport systems. To Stafford. I lived in London for quite a while - It wasn't a matter of whether having a car was WORTH it, I just didn't NEED a car as taxis were everywhere, as were buses and the underground. Even those people living 20 miles away didn't need a vehicle for most of the time. The likelihood of Stafford ever having a remotely comparable public transport system is zero. I find it strange that the Council is pushing fro resident permits (or rather, one Councillor in her own street) and not a word is mentioned about the dirty great big brand new, cordoned off car park in the centre of town lying dormant

Lol, an interesting comment from someone who used to drive into town and park in West Close.

Council burying it's head in the sand to the problem.

We had a survey which we and most neighbours returned but I called the council yesterday and was told it was a "long way off" - no help when the knock on effect of these permits will mean more cars in our street!
Hmmm we didn't get a survey. We already get people parking in our street then going in to work/town and then there's all the parents doing the school run. So now we're going to end up with those that used to park on the other side of Wolverhampton Road as well. There's not enough spaces for people living in the street as it is!

If West Close is that little road off Fairway (I'm unsure) then I can assure u that I have used that street to park twice in my life I don't routinely dump my car day after day after day. It's been useful twice, but if it wasn't available I'd not worry.

I agree. But a decent public transport system isn't some unobtainable unachievable dream it's quite a straightforward thing to achieve should there be political will and it were proven to negate our car dependence. If all these car drivers are doing is driving to town to work from Stafford suburbs or to the train station to catch a train to work then getting on a clean and affordable bus surely wouldn't be that difficult would it.

I don't believe I'd ever be able to do the 17 miles to work in under 2 hours by public transport.

Enjoying a drop of red.

Oh don't worry about it. Cllr Baron's OK, that's all that matters. That's the way it's been for decades. Can't understand why her constituents keep voting her back in...
