It would appear that Royal Mail have a potential thief somewhere in the system which transports letters from Surrey to sunny Cotes (and possibly Chateau Doxey).

One of my birthday cards arrived clearly opened and searched (grubby fingerprints on the card, torn envelope consistent with trying to open an envelope without damaging it, and failing) and then put into a "we're sorry that mail addressed to you have become damaged whilst in our care" bag.

I've yet to contact the sender to see if they sent anything in the card, however, as the Royal Mail specifically advise against sending cash in the post I suspect there is no recourse.

No real point to posting other than to make you aware that this could have possibly happened at the Stafford sorting office, so keep an eye on your post to see if it's had an attempted break in, so to speak.

My mother carelessly posted a birthday card to my daughter and put cash in it and it never arrived. I have to say there was a time you would know your postie nowadays every time I see ours they're different.

it's less likely to be your postie, even if they do change a lot. it could be anywhere from collection onwards.
royal mail, due to the amount of people employed by them will have thieves in there, but the same can be said for any large employer.

Enjoying a drop of red.
If it does turn out that something is missing, report it to RM security. If there's a pattern developing they'll be well up to trying to track the source down.

It is also well worth remembering that even if something dodgy has happened (and it's happened to me in the past) the vast majority of RM employees are honest. It's just a very small number (comparatively) who spoil it for everyone else, just like in every other organisation.

I usually have to send a few xmas cards with cash in them to the same address in london ...
I buy a brown padded envelope and put them in there and send as one.
Safer, and works out cheaper too !

A nephew once worked over christmas as the royal mail sorting office...warned us about what goes on...

Once had a small parcel from Glenmorrangie delivered with the packaging torn open. Postie must have been as dissappointed as us...wriiting on box said 'a small piece of our distillery for you' ...the postie left the bit of the wood from the barrel inside the package

Agreed, I will if there was cash in there (30 years of experience would suggest there was).

And again, agreed, I chose my wording carefully to not imply they are all at it.

250,000th poster!
Our post (on the North side of town) regularly turns up with corners open, or small rips or generally just ripped open - we often have the same (few) post-people, but I wouldn't say it was them at all - I'm reckoning on the sorting office staff on its travels between being posted & arriving in the posties sack.

It comes to something when your kids can't even open their own birthday cards without someone having their theiving hands on it first.

The postman arrived at my Mum's house yesterday.

There's something exciting for you here...

Oh, that'll be my new mobile phone battery, but I've no idea how to put it in.

Hang on, then, I'll do that for you - rip, click, click, click - there you are, done!

I was waiting for my 7-speed freewheel to appear via Royal Mail - fully expecting a trip to Newport Road after having found a card.

I don't know how he managed it, but I came home to find it, double wrapped in bubble-wrap, lying on the hall carpet.

Had a few parcels from china with small tears in before xmas, could have been posties or customs I guess. That said I suspect the sorting office staff more than those that deliver, as its easy to spot a pattern if its all on one persons round.

I missed a parcel delivery the other day. Luckily, I read the card properly before setting off through the barricades to Newport Road, as he had very kindly left it at the local Post Office, just a few hundred yards away. I was half-expecting to be charged for this service, as the sender can pay for it as an option, but all I had to do was sign and take it away.

This has happened once before, some years ago.

I an always concerned when I get a card stating a missed delivery but it says I have to wait until the following day to collect it....I ruddy hope they don't take their bag home instead of going back to the depot

Still waiting for a parcel that was delivered Wednesday, yet then somehow did another loop of distribution centres and us now apparently awaiting collection despite never being carded.
