Running songs

I've been bullied into doing a half marathon in September.

Training begins today.

I need music to run to but I've had a look at some of the 'running albums' that are available and I can't say they're calling out to me.

I'd rather pay a little more and download individual songs and listen to music I like.

I'm just in need of a little inspiration.

It would appear to me, thinking in a logical kind of whatsit, that you would need to find the tempo you would ideally like to run to.

As with the idea of cadence in cycling (that basically boils down to how many pedal strokes per minute you are aiming for), with running you will need to find your ideal bpm, coz you will inevitably pad, pad, pad at the rate in the tune. Count out the number of footfalls that feels good over the course of a minute (or over ten seconds and multiply by six), and you should have your ideal.

Then find tunes that have the same number of bpm and download accordingly.

I think that what the running songs album is based on, although I'm not a huge fan of most of the music of them, I have an American Anthems CD which has got some great tracks on for running but I'm after quite a diverse playlist if I'm going to start running 3-4 times a week. I like most stuff that falls into the category or sits on the edge of mainstream music, except R&B which always makes me turn the radio over.

I find most of the "Running songs" Poppy and horrible, I just listen to what I like nowadays, and some inspirational songs (the popular ones, so not point listing!)

It's all in your head, and I enjoy listening to music (which I like) I bought some running songs CD/Exercise- I end up skipping tracks far to often on my mp3 player with them on it !

How do I edit this?
Personally I'd say as long as it's moderately upbeat, fresh and something you enjoy play whatever you like. I've just got back from my run on which I listened to (50s boogie guitarist) Jimmy Reed. I listen to a wide rage of music from bluegrass to Fatboy Slim while I'm runnign and I find the only thing that makes a difference to my pace is whether I'm digging it....
