Secondary schools in Stafford

I'm warning you, I was 'educated' in Cannock. So as part of my heritage I must duly accept your challenge of a skirmish of some variety. Might I also add at considerable volume and with more than a slight inflection of aggression 'come and 'ave ago if ya fink ya 'ard enough'.
Bloody hell, man - take a starting handle with you, she's a bruiser..

I didn't go to school here, I went to an old fashioned girls school Oop Norf - lovely. (For those not familiar with sarcasm, that was it back there)

With no prior knowledge of any Stafford schools, I chose King Eddies for my son as we used to live just round the corner and at the time it had a really good report - he seems to like it there and he's doing really well, top set for everything

Do they have schools for old fashioned girls up north still?

And it's definitely a good idea that he takes his false teeth with him at all times.

I am not going to tell you about my experience, but it certainly is your choice, and has been said there don't seem to be any bad schools in Stafford. My wife is a Deputy Head in a Stafford Primary School, so don't start me on about OFSTED, they are a complete lottery, and they had a reasonable one! More based on previouse her 20+ years of experience, and me having a chief inspector as a friend! My self and my spouse went to Balfour; my eldest son went to King Edwards, and has gone on to Uni'. The middle one is taking GCSE's at Eddies this year, and destined for Sixth Form, and Uni'. The youngest is off to Eddies in September. I have nothing but praise for Eddies, a good mix of kids, from Haughton/Gnosall, Highfields, Western Down's, Rising Brook, Ect. Was a bit concerned that then the last head left a couple of years ago, but his replacement seems to be coping well with what was a very tough act to follow, and I believe the school got their best ever A Level results last year! I reckon you should let the kid attend which ever one his mates are going to, (assuming you approve of his choice of friends!) he will, know doubt, have an preference. Be re-assured that no matter where ever you live in stafford, you won't have a bad school near you. 5+ years ago I would have had doubts about Rising Brook (Stafford Sports College), but I believe they have turned the corner, despite not having great results, and they had a good OFSTED recently, but I have said what I think about them! I would send him to the nearest school, it is probably where his friends are going, BEST off LUCK to the lad. Let us know where he goes!

Florence, you are likely have gone to school with my brother and sister then...

To me it's very much what you make of school, and how your parents help. I went to Riso (93-2000) and I came out of it fine, I've got what I would like to think is a very respectable job, and all my school friends have too.

The question should be, are there any old fashioned girls up north :P
Mine isnt all girls anymore, they merged with the lads school next door shortly after I left (typically) and now its co-ed. The new uniform isn't half as hideous either. B*****ds.

Both mine went to Walton HS, and both went on to get firsts at Uni.

Personally, I believe it's a case of horses for courses. I felt at an early stage my son was a bit above the norm, so (at the time) was more than happy for him to go to Walton. He ended up with 6 A's at A-Level at a time when that was the highest mark you could get (can you get A* nowadays?). I'm not sure he'd have done so well at another school, though if he'd been at a different level of ability, then maybe he would have done.

Having said all that, the most important people in a child's education are the parents or guardians. Just think of how much time they're with you rather than in school.

It's almost impossible to get an outstanding in ofsted! Majority of teachers have to gain an outstanding within the school in order for the school to recieve it and when some of the targets set are having all the children in your room arrived and seated on time is one of them, when there will always be a little johnny in a class wondering in a few minutes late! as well as any printed resources that have to be perfect e.g if you tell the class look at the red box on your handout and that red box is considered by the inspector to be red/orange then that becomes unfit for purpose! The standards are so high and sometimes out of the teachers control, especially if the printer is on the blink!

For the school to get an outstanding you need all the teachers to be up to scratch for sure. My wife has only been teaching for 3 years and she's been through 3 Ofsteds, 1 during her PGCE placement at a school in Stoke (rough school), 1 at her first school in Birmingham (inner city, national challenge) and she's recently had an Ofsted at her new school in Stafford. She personally was observed by Ofsted in all 3 cases and in all 3 was graded outstanding but the schools were not as other teachers didn't meet the same level.

I reckon you are going to regret starting this thread Charlotte! Folk will have different opinions, and prepared to tell you them, even if they are pretty biased and not based on any recent or even objective experience, folk just love sharing/waffling/boasting experience about their kids, (Pot calling the kettle black!Ed). IMO it might be more useful to ask them how they made the decision to choose their own school, and that of their kids, I may be wrong, but I bet the majority chose the local school, where their mates went; unless they were catholic, or able to go private, but the latter opens another can of worms! Safe opions about that FOR ANOTHER THREAD, (Your Own! PLEASE)

I'm not from round 'ere originally, so I can't really recommend my old school..........but you are quite correct, I "chose" my high school as it was nearest and my mates all went there too. It didn't do any of us any harm in the long run although it was a bit of a shock mixing with some of the 'bigger' & 'rougher' kids at first !

I went to ten schools and I don't recall there ever being any choice.

As I've said before, and will, no doubt, say again - if you're going to rely on schools for your education, then you're on a loser from the start.

*standing ovation*

Can't help with local schools, afraid I wasn't in Stafford at that point for my personal experience, and my small person isn't at one. But I'll echo everyone else - let the youngster decide :)

All our 4 went to Blessed Bills, youngest absolutely hated it there. They didn't have a choice, mainly cos neither me nor their dad wanted them goin off to Balfour and Bills were Catholic. I went Alleynes in Stone, the education welfare officer, who came visit mum after 1 of my many absences, said it was the 2nd worst school in the county for violence, that was way back in 1977 tho I must add. It has improved now,my 4 would've definately gone there if we'd lived in Stone.
