It must have been a good one, it met EEC standards! Apparently it was converted into workshops in 1990, costing £2.1m. Also says it belonged to the prison?
The building that's still there was renovated and then used as a Prisoners' Welfare centre, maybe it still is, though I see little activity there these days. I believe that it was the offices of the abattoir. The workshops are the buildings behind it. The road into the the car-park is/was Red Lion Street - the cast-iron sign is still there on the building. There may have been houses where the car-park is now, I think. The abattoir was owned by Rowland's, who had a grocery shop, a bakery and a public house, as well.

I believe that this building was part of the abattoir and other parts may have been demolished to make way for the car-park situated to the right.

Ernest Rowlands bakery was the second on the left, on Red lion St, (They did lovely jam donuts warm from the oven) the first building on the left was a pub whose name I forget, but probably The red lion? and it had black and white tiles on the front step which is still the angled bit at the front on the right, the abattoir was a little further down on the right at the far end of the now car park.

I defer to your knowledge of slaughtering and dismemberment. The pub the Rowlands owned was the County Stores and was on Gaol Road, according to Stafford Past Track - although, 'County Stores' does make you wonder if that was really the grocery side of the business - awaiting Darts 22 for confirmation...

Thinking about it, it wasn't a pub on the corner, pos a bread and cake shop, my old boss knew ernie rowland, and sent me into the bakery to get the donuts at half price straight from ernie himself!
