Probably a stupid question, but does any one know anything about The Railway Club, Old Goods Yard, Newport Road? It came up in a conversation but no-one seemed to know it.

The road entrance is still there

It was opposite the coal shop

That beautiful ornate shed to shopping sits on its site

Tesco car park covers what was once a hockey pitch and pavilion

Tesco never actually got planning permission for the structure that exists today

But who would pick a fight with ugly Tesco

I'm fairly sure that I went there once - late '70s, I expect - it's one of many community assets that have disappeared over the years.

South End Club
Lotus Club.
MRI Club.
Stychfields.
Labour Club.
Navy Club.

..there must be many others, too..

Is Doxey Institute still going?

The railway club used to have a function room and has bingo and groups performing. Compere in the early 70s was a train driver called Dixie Dean.

Railway club was a popular venue in the early to late 70's. there was regular groups & discos on & cheap beer too.. spent many a pi55yar5ed Saturday night there.
Played many a game of cricket on what is now the Tosco car park, never played hockey though.
Did get sent by Mr Woodger to find the fairies behind the pavilion once.

There was the BRC club at Burton Manor and Universal presumably had one, too.

Dorman's Club is still going, I believe - or whatever it's called this week.

Amasal Club still runs - and Highfields.

The BRC club was famous for its acts

Including Rod Stewart and Eric Clapton and a young kid called Colin Cooper
