My neighbour also told me that cutting it when there could be frost will also kill it....which is annoying as mine could do with another cut. :(

It is detrimental for lawns to be overgrown. It is now best to be left until spring and gradually taken back down in smaller steps.

When you say "overgrown" how long is too long?

It was done 3 weeks ago and this is how long it is now.
I personally think that its finding a dry day that is the problem rather than the length of the grass.

I still havent found anyone who can pop up and do it though.

Hubby is out from 7.00am to 7.30pm so he only has weekends and we have been tied up with other things.

If thatch hasn't occured..the only way you can properly cut the lawn in question is to use a high powered petrol mower , non rollered, high hp, rotary with a mulching function. Effectively feeding the grass with it's own clippings...this is not the same as just removing the collection box.
In any case, if its frosty DO NOT cut it. Opening grass stems to frost will kill it..there is a reason why it stops growing in winter.

@Carole that looks perfectly fine to me for this time. Ours are longer than that and I still wouldn't dream of cutting them now.
I thought you were talking about grass much longer than that.

How do I know if thatch has occured?
Its only been 3 weeks since the last cut?

Hubby would be mowing it if the mower hadnt conked out.

Does frost kill grass?

Cows eat grass all the time all year round....and the fields near us keep growing grass....

is it an old wives tale?

In every other year we have always done a late mow....as have ALL our neighbours. 3 of our neighbours were mowing last weekend.
Its really truly amazing how our grass still grows if we have been cutting late and cutting long all these years.

Ok, no we dont have thatch.

I seem to have given the wrong impression of our lawn.

Its usually mown weekly in the summer.

We pay Green Thumb to come 4 times a year.

Its well looked after but hubby hasnt had chance to mow it for 3 weeks due to other things going on.

You can see by the pic that thelawn is green, no dandelions or other rubbish.

So when I say its "long", I mean "long" by my standards.

Blimey, I only asked for someone to pop up for an hour to mow the lawn, you would think I was asking for the holy grail.

I thought that it was a quiet time for gardeners right now and that they would be glad of a job, however small (bearing in mind that a small job might lead to bigger jobs).

Depending open their circumstances, some gardeners might actually be fairly busy now, autumn clearances plus less daylight and less decent weather may conspire to consume their time.

Some gardeners..to use a broad term..may also be trained on trees also, therefore they will be much busier as this is the main arb season.
Don't be disheartened but it may take a while to get a busy professional to bring his mower back out of its winter service state.

Gave ours a last cut last weekend it seems to be staying very green despite of the cold snap

I don't know, I suspect she just didn't want me making noise with the mower....either way I need to do mine too.

I do understand.

I wasn't particularly looking for a professional either, although that would be nice.

A pensioner wanting to earn extra beer money would have sufficed but it seems like they are in short supply as well.

Buy a goat, for all round garden care at minimum cost.

It'll impress the neighbours as well...

Great idea but the dog would chase the poor thing.

We (the Best Kept Village Committee) wanted to borrow a goat from a local farmer to keep the church grounds tidy but one of the church wardens didnt like the idea.

At GEC, there were "offices" with half-height partition walls, usually referred to as Pig-Pens. A certain person was very proud of being allocated a pig-pen and kept it scrupulously neat - he also always went home for the lunch hour.

One day, he returned from his lunch to find his (previously pristine) office occupied by a full-grown goat. He was a lot less amused than other people were. The disposal of the goat became very complicated, as it was never discovered where it came from and it was eventually fostered by the RSPCA prior to being rehomed.

Remarkably, nobody saw the goat being smuggled into and through the factory - but we all know who did it.

I remember being in a hotel in Antigua once in my BA days.

Gorgeous hotel all open plan, so that the outside merged into the inside if that makes sense.

Anyway once a cow either got in (or was coaxed in) one of the lifts.
