SERVICE... Holocaust Memorial Day will be marked at Stafford's St Mary's Church.

HOLOCAUST Memorial Day on Friday will be marked by a special service at Stafford's St Mary's Church.

The service of prayer and reflection will be at 11am and will feature music from the children's choir at St Bede's School, Bishton.

Pupils will also be coming to the service from Walton School, Stafford, and Stafford Manor School.

The Mayor of Stafford Borough, Councillor Geoff Collier, will attend the service, along with other civic and community leaders

The service will remember the genocide of Jewish people and other persecuted communities during the Second World War, as well as other atrocities since then, and the continued persecution of people around the world because of their race or religion.

Father Richard Grigson, Rector of Stafford, said: "This year the national theme chosen for Holocaust Memorial Day is 'How can life go on?' and this gives us all an opportunity to reflect on how we can remember and honour the dead, seek truth, justice and reconciliation for survivors, and do what we can to aid refugees fleeing persecution and to help communities to rebuild.

"Sadly, as we know only too well from the world news, the need to work and pray for peace, tolerance and understanding is just as pressing as it has ever been.

"But we are pleased that so many young people will be joining us at St Mary's this year to take part in this special service, and that our event in Stafford is one of nearly 6,000 acts of commemoration that will be taking place across the UK in the next few days."

Holocaust Memorial Day is held on January 27 each year – the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1945 – and has been adopted as an international day of remembrance by the United Nations.
