Hmm...Stafford Forum Hire Out A Track For A Day?
Anyone be up for that? :)

I'd like to do it in my Focus Turbo Diesel just for laughs haha...but my CBR600RR would be much faster :P
Fast good, faster better.
What you had out of it then?

I thought this too, but many councils are getting rid of them as part of budget cuts so something doesn't quite add up.

Or is this something to do with councils paying maintenance and government getting the fines (did I make this up or is it true?)?
I thought local councils don't get the money generated from speed cameras it just goes into a big pot for the government as well. I may have completely mis-read though.

I'm sure I've heard somewhere rumours of small towns in other European countries getting rid of speed limits completely and just leaving drivers to drive at what they felt was a responsible speed for the type of road they were on. Anyone know if this is true or the success rate of it? I can't really see if being much of a success. Maybe if all "new drivers" (3 years experience and under) were forced to a speed limit it might have a better success rate. It always sounded like an interesting idea to me but I just don't know if it would actually work or just cause more accidents. Maybe with decent signage to warn of residential areas etc.

I also heard a rumour of a small European town (possibly in Sweden or Norway) turning off all their traffic lights for a day and seeing what happened. I would LOVE to see this experiment in Stafford! I've found that when the centre of town has electrical problems and the traffic lights go out people are generally fairly good and traffic didn't just shut down the town. But I don't know how well it would work for certain areas. It would be difficult for certain places like the junction by the cinema and the Riverway crossroads due to lack of visibility but those were the places where I found drivers to be particularly good and reasonable about giving way to others so traffic didn't back up. However when I start to think about how Stafford seems to have way too many traffic lights I'm always reminded of this http://xkcd.com/277/

I'd love to have a go on a track day but alas I fear my car would be beaten by everyone!

That may be a key point here. I drove all the way back from Prague with not a single incident, until I got to Dover - I hadn't actually reached the public highway before people started cutting me up...

The fact that removing traffic lights might actually improve matters doesn't seem to be a good enough reason to do it...

True! I think British drivers are still better than some other countries though. I guess it's a "cultural" thing (If you can call dangerous driving cultural). It's a shame how much, even around Stafford you see dangerous driving/impatient drivers.

Agreed, they've given us fast bikes, flat tarmac, and a licence to ride. And then they go and stop us all speeding? Whats the hell in the point in smooth roads and fast cars/bikes then? Years of evolution wasted because of a pesky government :P
Lol i'm not advocating riding or driving like a cock on the public highway, regardless of how much track days cost, but i think that a lot of people would turn up if it was £10 for half a day, say 3 hours or something.

I appreciate track upkeep is horrendously expensive and there would have to also be some kind of insurance in place both for the circuit and the punter however the amount raised by speed cameras is monumental so creaming some of that off for this kind of thing wouldn't be detrimental to the budget a all, IMO.
Its called the nurburgring, and its very possible to make a track you can just ride on ride off. Although there must be something stopping them doing it in england. Appantly the speed cameras cost alot to put in, need 240v supply etc so perhaps takes a while to get the money back from them?

ps. ultra sbm were doing cadwell park on mon 6th sep still some places left if ya fancy it ;)

On my way down this morning I noted that the southbound 50 limit has moved a couple of miles further south and now starts just before J10.

I was agreeing with you, John Marwood did indeed say :

I drove through a few of these gantrys on my way home from Shrewsbury last night (southbound J10-J8). A fair number of drivers seemed to be ignoring the temporary speed limits so lemming-like I did the same.

Noticed on my way back in this morning that there are probably 5-6 gantrys with a full rack of fixed cams on every lane (4 total). I assume that if i'd been done these would have flashed like a normal GATSO, but it was a sunny evening so may not have noticed/they don't need to flash in bright conditions.

I'm bricking it coz i've just picked up three points on London Road in Shrewsbury. Technically, if you were busted on every gantry M6 southbound you could lose your license in one day!

Moral of the story: don't speed on the M6 southbound J10-J8!!

The gantry mounted cameras don't flash. On the getting logged at every camera note if you were done on every set it would be classed as the same offence.

I noticed yesterday its a variable speed limit camera, seems to me that they will be used more when speed limit is changed..
