Stafford 2023

I was walking through town today and realised that if all of the proposed plans (houses, shopping centres etc) come off - and there's some kind of sustained economic growth - ( and I like to think there will be ) that 10 years from now Stafford could have a very different feel to it - both the centre and the outskirts.

I don't think this is a bad thing, change is inevitable and generally should be welcomed. I'd hate to think we lived somewhere that was stagnant.

When I get a second I'll try and knock together a map of what Stafford might look like in 2023, but it would be good to have a thread to collect all of the proposed changes and planned developments in one place - along with predictions, would like to have's, fears for the future etc...

Enjoying a drop of red.
We'll all be driving around in our electric hover-cars

Some people will be complaining that we need an extra bit of sky to use as a bypass to the west of town as the congestion is soooo bad and Henryscat will still be trying to persuade us that by not sitting next to snotty nosed kids and perverts on the bus or the train we are evil planet-killers.

Plus ça change..

Yeah but in electric hover cars!
The bar stewards promised when I was a kid that we would have them by now!
That's when men walked on the moon (with the windblown flag)

The influx of x thousand soldiers is bound to have an enormous impact upon the town - i reserve judgement as to whether this will be a good/bad thing.

Which i guess makes me a Reservist. :v:

Said it a zillion times before, I am not anti-car, but I am anti too much car. Stafford is going to expand. There will be no increase in road capacity into the town centre, so the town faces two choices: more clogged roads, or use an alternative for some (that does not mean all) journeys.

Going by the effect Whittington Barracks has, I'd say bad.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
With all these new houses and possibly new people moving into Stafford, what I would like to know is where the people are going to work?

Or is Stafford just going to be a huge dormitory?

I think most of the people will work elsewhere. I think it is inevitable that given the proximity of Stafford to the strategic road and rail network that "commuter town" status is pretty likely. We are 1 hr 20 mins from London - 50/1hr ish to both Birmingham and Manchester. Stafford already has a pretty hefty commuter population, I can't see that changing substantially and certainly not by 2023.
