Stafford Castle - Old drawings and artistic reconstructions

Anyone know where I might find some of these? Inside and out preferably, just to give a good idea of the castle’s old appearance(s). Just needs to be enough to get a good idea of what used to be where, materials, etc.

Already shot an email off to the Heritage address, but they don’t seem terribly responsive.

There are three to choose from - which are you particularly interested in?

Whatever has the best architectural data really, my goal is to reconstruct it in Virtual Reality as a little work piece for my studio. So anything better than the current derelict ruins that make for an interesting environment to walk around.

The stuff @Studio Tan linked looks incredibly helpful, so I’ll start there. But any more information would be great

In that case you'd probably be better off concentrating on no. 3.

Of the existing fabric, you'll find quite detailed information in this book, which i'm pretty sure is reference only in the library, and is a rather hefty £20 if you want to peruse it in the comfort of your own home. Having said that, i do have a copy you could borrow.

From the existing fabric, and the plethora of extant images elsewhere, it would be easier to reconstruct this one than the other two, the images of which are largely conjectural.

I'd be more than happy to help if you have any need of it - drop me a line if so.

I’ll bear that in mind, thanks! Shall peruse what I currently have and go from there, the book is a very handy lead.

How come you’re so clued up on the castle? Just keen interest?

I parked at the Castle today, in order to search for a grave in Castle Church cemetery, on behalf of someone who lives in New Zealand. Having found it, I had a wander up to the Castle and found a bunch of studenty types rather disgruntled at not being able to have a look inside. Sure enough, the access door was locked. A couple of blokes in a van turned up, with a key, and informed them that it is "closed on Mondays".

It seems a shame to not unlock the door when we seem to have the resources to hang up garish purple banners everywhere.

I've (eventually) found this - http://staffordmuseums.co.uk/museums/stafford-castle/ - it seems to not be open Tuesdays either.

In the middle of the holiday season that's just rediculous.

We all went up on Friday morning to show the kids and it was locked up then too. Massive disappointment.

Just got this answer. Maybe you were too early..?

The Castle Keep is opened during the opening hours of the Visitor Centre - currently 11am to 4pm Wednesday to Sunday. The Keep is opened by 11.30am and is usually closed at 3.30pm. We also open on Bank Holiday Mondays.

During winter opening hours - November to March - the Keep is only open on Saturday and Sunday at the same times as above.

I, too, am always Massively Disappointed when i visit somewhere outside of their opening hours and find them closed.

Just last week i went to Warwick Castle at 3am only to find the place was totally in darkness with no operating ticket booths.

Never again.

You just lost a customer, Merlin Entertainments!

Imma gonna tell my neighbour, who has no intention of going there at all anyway, not to go there too - HA!

Suck it, Merlin!
