Stafford Cinema - ups & downs.

That's an interesting point. Going back to the aforementioned company, they didn't pay very much when I was there and I doubt they do now, so would it be right to praise them given how much the owners command, or the FTSE 250 company I work for now who now pay decently (although it's taken them a long time to get there). This is a conversation not for this thread of course.

No I said a dozen, if it was 24 I would have said 2 dozen ;)

Of course I am not going into specifics but the top family earner is 750,000 annually leaving in rowley park.

a couple live newport road earn over 250,000.

The rest earning over 100,000 to 250,000 live from baswich to milford areas.

I don't mind admitting I associate myself with money, as I am fortunate enough have it myself. In 2017 there will be another addition to Stafford in that bracket...me :)

So there is plenty of money in stafford, I know there is. Stafford itself is just, and mean just slightly behind Lichfield and South Staffordshire in average earnings.

Congratulations, Gareth. You have hidden shallows.

No longer in Newcastle, and having to compete with b365 for technical staff, so likely to have to raise their salary offers as time goes on if they want to stay competitive.

Meanwhile, back at the former Odeon/Stafford Cinema....

Why doesn't whoever is going to run the new Riverside cinema buy it, and run it as a cinema?

That way the existing cinema, which is fully functional and not totally unattractive, could be retained and there would be no need to construct another box monstrosity on Riverside.

Or am I missing something?

It doesn't matter how much you "earn", if you are not spending it in the town you are doing nothing to help it. Gareth mentions Lichfield - (Stafford is actually way behind it in terms of money and high net worth residents) - take a walk around Lichfield and you will see it is dying on it's arse as the people who live there do not spend their money there. The money being spent in the town comes from tourists. Those with money are grateful for the Waitrose but rarely venture into the town itself. Another thread has become a willy wagging contest.

Back to the point - the old cinema will, I fear, be left to rack and ruin unless some sucker can be found. The inside needs too much spending on it to make it suitable for anything else. Is it a listed building? If so, the Council will screw up any chance of the outside being rescued. It is probably too close to Wetherspoons for them to be interested and, whilst it would make a good live venue I doubt that will happen. I predict a major fire in a few years time.

It pains me to say you're right, but you're right.

...though, we have a cinema, so let's allow another to be built, hoorah!?

I'll see your fire prediction and raise you a classic "...a terrible danger to the public and a drug haven etc, so it needs to come down..."

When was the last time anyone went here, it still sells tickets, are we suggesting it's already dead and buried as a cinema?

Lack of facilities and access for people with disabilities is a huge negative point for the current cinema.

The new development will have 6 screens instead of 3. I imagine it will have better seating, premium seating and far better food facilities as well. They may even put the heating on during the winter.

Stafford's cinema whilst "operational" is a poor example of such.... Dirty, cramped, of its time, with poor facilities and no disabled access to 2 of the 3 screens....

It might of been great 20 years ago but things have moved on since then

What d'ya think'll be the last showing?

It's got to be either 'Cinema Paradiso' or 'The Last Picture Show' (both great movies IMO). Trivia: Apparently the first film to be shown when it was built in 1936 (following a concert by Jack Payne and his Orchestra) was Chaplin's 'Modern Times'.

Perhaps the last showing could be whatever was the first.

The current cinema struggles, and fails, to fill three screens with customers. So how will the new one fill six?

  • Improved seating (so theres a chance you don't get DVT)
  • Improved sound
  • Improved toilets
  • Improved ticket offers
  • Improved food and drink offerings
  • Improved access for disabled customers
  • Confidence that the company running the venture is actually interested in the long term and not just driving something into the ground
I think it will work.....

My son and his girlfriend go to the cinema almost every week. Never in Stafford. A new one would stop them from going out of town. The last time I went to the cinema, I travelled to Uttoxeter so I didn't have to visit the Stafford Cinema. A new one would stop me from doing that.
