We don't, any longer, see signs in windows saying 'no blacks, no dogs, no irish'.
So how is it ok to put up a sign saying 'no women over 45'?
    That's the point.
And the hoariness of this and some of the other assumptions implicit in the way it's presented.
And if that annoys me to the point of wanting to be 'rude' about it, then rude I shall damn well be.
Of sodding course people can do whatever they want to do, as long as it's legal and it doesn't hurt others. But whether or not it hurts others (and this does) is something people might care to have a little think about.
I thought that was obvious: maybe not.
    Next!
And PS: I may be a woman, but I'm not a 'bitch', nor do I indulge in 'bitchiness', and neither are terms I would ever consider using. You might also want to think about that.

One assumes you're equally outraged by the girl guides & their 'no women over 14' rule?

Always nice to see a measured, well thought out response to a pertinent point....

So why is this any different? Lots of organisations exclude on the ground of age, I'm genuinely curious as to why this has got you so wound up.

Last time this came up I raised the age thing (well actually I complained that people kept having a go at me at something I had no control over but don't necessarily see to be a problem) in our area group and I know a motion is going to the AGM to discuss it being raised, as it wasn't that long ago the upper age limit was raised to 45 from 40 - but that upper limit does keep things current and members are more likely to have more in common and form lasting friendships.

The bulk of us at the moment are mid 30's and those of us that have kids of around the same age, and the same experiences - and our careers at at a similar position - we have lots in common. Our members who are older and approaching the upper limit are similarly close in experiences etc - they are lovely people and I like them very much, and have similar outlooks but I can't imagine having much in common with someone 20 or 30 years my senior.

There is a Tangent (a Table family post 45 ladies group) in Stafford but they meet for lunch once a month I think. I also know there is a 45+ lunch group on StreetLife but again, no good if you're working etc. - If this riles you so much start a group yourself, have as many or a few rules that you wish to it and go from there.

Well I would tell you dear, only I can't quite seem to remember what I came on here for.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm just going to sit here quietly and knit a pair of socks for that nice Mr Corbyn.

So you aren't interested in helping me see your point of view at all then?

Would anyone else care to illuminate me as to why this debate about an age restriction on an organisation you all profess to have never wished to join has gone on five months?

Perhaps I can mediate on this subject. My understanding of the forum is to express your views on matters raised, raise issues that are important to Staffordians and to impart news and information about what’s going on in Stafford. It is also a place we can all seek advice and comfort for things that concern us.

Some of the threads will have no interest to some of us whilst other will be about favorite hobbies or pastimes. We don’t have to all like the same things that what makes us ALL interesting

The events thread is an opportunity for us all to list things that are going on then we can each make a choice whether we want to go or not.

The occasional thread causes indignation and forumites take umbrage at other forumites responses or statements.

All the forumites have ONE thing in common; they are part of the Stafford forum. So having that one thing in common and because each of us enjoys being part of a local forum I would politely request that we all resist the temptation to start a squabble on the forum.

Everyone has the right to question a statement or a posting. But the way we all do it should be respectful and certainly not use vocabulary that would be hurtful or rude. So in true Disney style “let it go let it go let it go” the age – upper – lower - or in the middle age group never bothered us anyway. Try to sing the last bit I couldn’t find music symbols on my keyboard

Goldi mate, it had finished several months ago. Then it was opened up again. Quite aggressively. Who knows why. But if you poke a stick in an anthill...

Rangers, Young Leaders etc go up to 26 and Guiders until recently up to 65 although I think that has now changed and Guiders can go on after 65. You could object to the fact that they do not (in thoery) allow girls under 5 as ageist I suppose.

Edit. Forgot about Trefoil which covers the older age ranges.

Right, at the risk of being uncontroversial!! Are there any groups that meet in an evening for those of us who can't afford to 'do lunch' during the week? :p

Not that I know of - and I've been trying to find out so I can point people in the direction of it - I would suggest some one start one and go from there...
