Stafford indoor market could be moved as part of a major town centre improvement plan

    https://www.staffordshire-live.co.uk/news/stafford-indoor-market-could-moved-5023064

Stafford's indoor market could be moved to a new location in the biggest revamp plans for the town centre 'in a generation'.

The market has been based at the rear of the Guildhall shopping centre, in Earl Street, since 1989 and as part of the project it would be moved to another location in the town, however exact details of a potential new base and redevelopments have not yet been released as they are "commercially confidential".

Probably a good move, the indoor market as is , is massively outdated and needs a total overhaul.

My guess would be the old coop or old m&s as likely new sites

It could move into its own purposely named square.

    If only we had one.

Disagree. It's bad enough with the crappy markets the council let in now. Having one permanently based there would put me right off ever visiting the town centre.

Disagree. My experience with markets is that they always seem more popular when held outdoors. Some of the markets that have been held in Market Square and surrounds, before the current excitement, have actually been rather good in my opinion.

I’ve found the farmers market to be ok but the other one on Wednesday (I think) was just complete tat. Not really a fan of markets in general.

Yeah the other market mostly seems to attract the much more commercially focused stuff like £5 doughnut stalls and crazily price milkshakes (a bit of milk, ice cream and sauce in an awkwardly shaped glass... don’t think they were even blended) that are in abundance at the county fair.

Much prefer our local doughnut stall gent, those mini doughnuts are lovely.

However moving is probably for the best, the current location has a somewhat “backstreets” vibe to it that can put people off, due to its age and lack of renovation. Dunno what they’ll put there instead mind you, maybe the promised foodhall?

I don’t think moving it outside is wise though, that makes it too weather dependent. Taking over the old M&S or Co-op would work and put it much more front and centre too. Might be a bit big though, last I went there I don’t think all the stalls were even filled but that may partially be because of the current location being so out of the way

I can't read about doughnuts without being reminded of Johnnie Cradock's "May all your doughnuts turn out like Fanny's"
