I opened an account for my daughter when she was born at The Staffordshire Building Society. Luckily for her, this has yielded quite a return in the past couple of years. Firstly, they changed into the Portman Building Society, so she received a nice little windfall. Now they are being taken over by Nationwide, so she will get another little windfall. I think I may change over to the Stafford Railway Society once this merger has gone ahead.
Unfortunately, this merger means that there will be another empty shop on the high street. If you don't know where The Portman Building Society is, it's opposite Tony & Guy.
