Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

big stores like M&S, which seems to have as many staff as customers at some times. Can a shop that expensive to run make a profit in Stafford?

Places like Marks and Spencer have more expensive items though, so even though they may appear to have fewer customers than say Primark for example, the spend per person is higher.

Buying 3 jumpers in Marks is about £100, 3 jumpers in Primark about £15.

Also the customer demographic for M&S is quite affluent, so instead of going in to buy one item, they will perhaps spend hundreds of pounds in one go. That’s not including those that do their food shop at Marks.

Having said that, their profits are down somewhat.
I’m not surprised, because “Rosie” underwear notwithstanding, which is beautiful, most of the ladies section looks like it’s been designed by Stevie Wonder.

Pound shops have another problem beyond straight inflationary issues - a lot, even most, of what they sell is imported and a falling pound causes further revenue pressures, they can 'absorb' these for a period, in the hope that the golden future will occur, but, when it doesn't, things need to happen...

A new phone repair shop has appeared next to the save the children charity shop, in the old cheques cashed place. Down craberry street.

Are there many affluent people in Stafford, though? I'm a great admirer of Rosie's underwear, but I don't think that will help M&S's sales.

Define affluent

There is a layer of public sector management who are paid double the average salary or more

Health
Police
Fire
Councils

I'm sure they all wear frilly knickers

Well I know for sure that the majority of the Council workers earning double the national average don't live in Stafford. And they prefer comfort over style.

Big Knickers in Stone?
Budgie smugglers in Eccleshall?
Not forgetting the Split Crotch Community of the Haywoods and Gnosall

From what I've seen over the past five years in M&S they seem to specialise in grandad clothing, so perhaps you should pop in :P
Just popped in - great advice.

Speaking to the lady at the candle shop in St Marys Mews - she is thinking of retiring some time this year. That will be a shame if it does shut- one of the few true independents in the town that genuinely care about its customers.
